Hanukah

I By MORRIS ROSENFELD

Translated by Helena Frank

Little candles glistening,
Telling all those listening.
Legends manifold.
Many a little story,
Tales of blood and glory,
Of the days of old.

PRINCETON, N. J.—Dr. Albert Einstein received a . delegation
of Philadelphia leaders at his home here to inspect plans for the

Quiet descends upon the Ancient
City,
.
A cool breeze wafts from the
Middle Sea;
The stars—miniature moons il-
luminate the sky,
Like lanterns set in a baldachin
of blur.

As I watch you flicker,
As I list you bicker,
Speak the ancient dreams:
"Jew, you also took the field,
Jews, you made the .foeman
yield."
God, how strange it seems!

Two thousand years have
passed; the same stars
Look down upon us in their
glorious beam and lustre;
And in their brightness they
scintillate a message:
"Behold Israel is free, is free
again,
And free and strong it shall
remain—Am Israel Hai!"

Once you knew on-. what you
stood,
Wore the crown of nationhood,
Ruled among the rest.
"Jew, you had a land, one time,
And an armed hand, one time---"
How it stirs the breast!

Little flickering glories
All your little stories
Wake the sleeping pain.
In my heart it stirred and cried,
Asks, and will not be denied:
"Shall this be again?"

Israelis Cheer Abolition
Of Rationing of Clothing

JERUSALEM, (JTA)—Ration-
ing of most items of clothing
and footwear was scrapped by
the Israel government. Essen-
tial foodstuffs and a few items
of clothing are all that remain
on the ration lists.
Commercial circles reacted
favorably to the new situation
which merchants believe will
speed up most retail transac--
tons. The move also restored
a measure of confidence in trad-
ing circles and the British gold
sovereign which had been sell-
ing at 29.5 Israeli pounds,
dropped to 28.5.

Believing that the stories of
our history serve as the best
introduction to the study of
our history, Mordecai H. Lewit-
tes describes the traditional
stories of the great Jewish per-
sonalities of ancient times in
"Heroes of Jewish History: Ab-
raham to Moses" (Hebrew Pub-
lishing Co., 77 Delaney, NY).
There are 11 illustrations, by
Audrey. Namowitz. To facilitate
classroom activities, each chap-
ter includes exercises, projects
and games.
The heroes delineated include
the Patriarchs, Joseph and his
brothers, Moses and his associ-

ring message and with appeals
for the rescue activities of JDC
and for the rehabilitation of the
Nazi victims in Israel. Since
then she has visited Israel sev-
eral times and has become so
thoroughly imb - ied with the Jew-
ish state's needs and accomplish-
ments that she has emerged as
one of the chief pleaders for
Israel's cause.
Out of her experiences has
sprouted also an interesting
novel, "Out of the Dust," just
issued by Crown Publishers • (419
4th, NY 16). It is an exciting
story about the builders of a
kibbutz in the Negev, their
struggles, their determination to
win against great odds.
Miss Waren begins her story
in the days of the British Man-
date. A group of youngsters
travel to the Negev to create a
settlement. They are opposed by
the elements, by the powers in
control, by dissection:' "they-!
carry on.
The manner in which the
British are defied, the under-
ground activities, the struggle
for justice, the human elements
that enter to create internal dis-
cord—these and numerous other
characteristics distinguish Miss
Waren's novel as a social study.
There is, of course, a love
story. This, too, is handled well
by Miss Waren in her novel in
which she recreates an interest-
ing chapter in Israel's rebirth.
