Moru
rf,enthan Montor Resignations
Rejected by Israel Government

Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News
JERUSALEM—The local press reported Tuesday that
Henry Morgenthau, Jr., chairman of board of the Israel
bond drive organization in the United States, and Henry '
Montor, its executive vice president, have submitted their
resignations to the Israel government.
A government spokesman however told the Jewish
Telegraphic Agency that the Israel government has not and
will not accept the resignations of the bond drive leaders.
The spokesman expressed himself as "hopeful" that Mr.
Morgenthau and Mr. Montor would withdraw their resigna-
tions in "the full understanding of Israel's economic situa-
tion."

Resignations Confirmed in New York

NEW YORK—The Israel bond office here on Tuesday
confirmed that the bond officers submitted their resigna-
tions and added that Mr. Morgenthau received a cable from
Premier David Ben-Gurion urging the withdrawal of the
resignations. Mr. Ben-Gurion also informed Mr. Morgen-
thau that he will consult with members of his cabinet and
will inform Mr. Morgenthau of the result. Pending further
communication from the Israel Premier, officers of bond
issue in New York refused to elaborate on the reason for
the resignations.

this purpose, if desired.
Ahmed Shukeiri of Syria de-
scribed Mr. Moe's speech ap-
pealing for peace negotiations
as a "noble appeal," but added
that Israel would have to prove
her peaceful intentions. He
stressed the Arabs' "desire for
peace" and their "conciliatory"
attitude contrasting it with
charges that mediation and con-
ciliation attempts had failed be-
cause of the Israelis.
He stated that the Arabs
would not "resist" direct talks,
provided they were based on the
principles and obligations Of the
UN Charter. He said that the
Arabs accepted the Norwegian
peace appeal and were prepared
to abide by Assembly resolutions
but doubted that Israel would
do so outside the halls of the
General Assembly.
