Israel to Elect Successor
To Dr. Weizmann on Dec. 8
JERUSALEM, (JTA)—Israel's
Parliament will meet on Dec. 8
to elect the Jewish State's sec-
ond president and successor to
Chaim Weizmann. Under Isra-
el law, the election must be held
within 30 days of the office be-
coming vacant and election is
by majority vote of the Knesset.
In view of the refusal of
Prof. Albert Einstein to accept
nomination to the presidency,
it became clear that the sec-
ond president of Israel would
be an Israel citizen and resi-
dent of the country rather
than an outstanding personal-
ity invited from abroad.
Nominations for the presi-
dency were to close on Nov.
28 and there was strong belief
that the choice would lie be-
tween Josef Sprinzak, Speaker
of the Knesset, and Isaac Ben,
Zvi, chairman of the Jewish
National Council (Vaad Leu-
mi), the supreme representa-
tive body of the Yishub under
the British Mandate. Both
are members of the Mapai
Party.
There was a possibility, how-
ever, that the Mapai, in view .of
the political situation and the
problem of reconstructing the
government coalition, would not
put forward a Mapai candidate
in the interests of harmony.
The leftwing Mapam Party
has nominated another Zionist
veteran, Dr. Itzhak Gruenbaum,
who served as Interior Minister
in the Provisional Government.
The Mizrachi Workers have in-
dicated their intention to nom-
mate Dr. Aaron Barth, and the
Mizrachi will nominate Dr. Mor-
decai Nurok, Minister of Posts,
Telephones and Telegraph.
Also named by the press
here as potential choices for
the presidency were Dr. Na-
hum Goldmann, chairman of
the Jewish Agency Executive,
and Chief Rabbi Isaac Her-
zog.
Sprinzak, who has served as
Acting President of Israel for
most of the past year, has gain-
ed wide note by his adroit
handling of the Knesset from the
Speaker's chair. There is strong
feeling in some Mapai circles
that the situation requires re-
tention on Sprinzak in that key
post.
Both Premier David Ben-Gur-
ion and Foreign Minister Moshe
Sharett were reported to be sup-
porting the candidacy of Ben
Zvi. One reason was said to be
their desire to avoid further
complications _ involved in elec-
tion of a new Speaker should
Sprinzak be elevated to the
presidency.
Sixty-eight-year-old Isaac
Ben Zvi., a native of Russia, set-
tled in Palestine in 1907. The
Turkish authorities exiled him
in 1917 and he went to the
United States where he recruit-
ed volunteers for the Jewish Le-
gion in which he himself served.
The British later named him to
the Palestine Advisory Council.

THE ROSENBERGS MUST NOT DIE!
ON NOVEMBER 18TH, THE U.S. SUPREME COURT REFUSED TO CONSIDER THE' APPEAL OF
ETHEL AND JULIUS ROSENBERG. NOW ONLY THE PRESIDENT CAN SAVE THE ROSEN-
BERGS FROM ELECTROCUTION — AND ONLY YOU CAN INFLUENCE THE PRESIDENT.
The conscience of humanity can never be clear if the Rosen-
bergs die, for they steadfastly maintain their innocence and the
evidence of their guilt is not convincing.
Mr. President, in the name of humanity, stay their execution,
at least until America has heard the full story of this shocking
case!
ALL OVER THE WORLD, prominent people have expressed
their horror over this "new Justice". Why death to the
Rosenbergs and only 10 years to admitted traitors like Axis Sally
and Tokyo Rose? Why death, the first in American peacetime his-
tory, for "conspiracy to commit espionage for Russia in 1944"
when Russia was our ally. Why death based on unsupported testi-
mony of two confessed atomic spies, David and Ruth Greenglass,
one of whom is serving 15 years, and the other never brought to
trial?
"From our hearts come the words: `Death sentence too
horrible'." — Jewish Daily Forward, April 6, 1951
YOU CANNOT LET THEM DIE. YOUR VOICE,
TOGETHER WITH HUNDREDS OF THOU-
SANDS* MORE, MUST URGE PRESIDENT
TRUMAN TO CLEMENCY.
A
• Two damaging witnesses, ex-Communist Elizabeth Bent-
ley, and confessed spy Harry Gold, never knew or saw the
defendants before. They testified only that "membership in
the Communist Party made it 'implicit' to' carry out orders
from Moscow." The Rosenbergs were never proven to be Com-
munists.
*
THE ONLY TANGIBLE EVIDENCE produced by the
Government was: (1) a Spanish Refugee Appeal collection.
can found in the Rosenberg apartment; and (2) a nominat-
ing petition signed by Ethel Rosenberg in 1941 for a successful
Communist candidate for N. Y. City Council,
• The testimony of David Greenglass "made little scientific
sense" (Time Magazine). According to Dr. Harold C. Urey,
noted atomic scientist, "detailed data on the atomic bomb
would require 80 to 90 volumes of close print which only a
scientist or engineer would be able to read. Any spies capable
of picking up this information will get information more
rapidly by staying. home and working in their own laboratory."
"In the Rosenberg-Sobell case, the U. S. A. has a unique chance to give lead-
ership to the world by adopting the Christian way, by commuting and revis-
ing the sentences . . ."
An Orthodox Rabbi
A
THE ROSENBERGS WERE tried in an atmosphere of war
hysteria. They were judged by the political climate, not by the
facts.
• When the trial started, the Government announced it
would call 118 witnesses, including top U. S. nuclear physicists.
Only 20 witnesses were ever called, including no atomic ek-
perts.

Dr. Meyer Sharff
"It is inconceivable to me that in our country a death sentence should be so
lightly given, as was the case in the Rosenberg trial."
New Zealand Minister
The Very Rev. C. W. Chandler, Dean of Waikato
"It would be cruel, inhuman and barbaric in the extreme and would raise a
storm of protest throughout the world if one of the chief partners in the
world's Democratic States countenanced the infliction of a death penalty,
where even a modicum of doubt existed as to the guilt of the persons con-
cerned."
. —
University of Chicago Professor
Dr. Anatol Rapoport
"Mr. President, I strongly urge you to exercise executive clemency in the
—
Rosenberg case . . To the vast majority, to those who have faith in the
greatness of our heritage, your act will be an indication of your stature as a
man and a leader."
An English Member of Parliament
—
Sidney Silverman
"I contemplate with horror the . . . death sentence. To exact the extreme
penalty from these two unfortunates in these circumstances is to make the
Rosenbergs responsible for all the errors of the statesmen of the world which
since the end of the war have so tragically lost the peace for which we all
hoped. .
