Hello, Boys and Girls:
Many of you will be celebrat-
ing this Thanksgiving weekend
by attending the movies with
your families. Perhaps you'll go
to see the new film version of
"Ivanhoe," the famous novel by
Sir Walter Scott. You'll be in-
terested to know that the char-
acter of Rebecca, played by
Elizabeth Taylor, is believed to
have been based by Scott on a
Jewish girl, from Philadelphia,
Rebecca Gratz.
You've probably heard her
name before. Many Jewish youth
groups have chapters honoring
her memory. Rebecca Gratz was
born in Philadelphia in 1781.
She was ardently interested in
furthering Jewish life in Ameri-
ca, and was a pioneer in giv-
ing Jewish religious education a
firm place in this country. She
also founded the Jewish orphan-
age in her city.
Scott came to know her when
he visited his friend, American
author Washington Irving, in
Philadelphia. He was much im-
pressed by the attractive young
American Jewess. The results of
that meeting? See it on t h e
screen, in "Ivanhoe."

Operation Sheep-Lift
When King David was a boy,
sheep-raising was the main
trade in Israel. Now, that ancient
industry may be revived, with
the help of the modern airlift.
On his recent visit to Israel,
Dr. Solomon Goldberg, an Aus-
tralian surgeor and sheep-
raiser, saw tremendous amounts
of grass going to waste in olive
and orange groves. 'Why waste
it?" he thought. so he has leased
1,000 acres in the northern
Negev which he intends to de-
velop into a grazing area. Be-
ginning this fall, the sheep-lift
will fly 1,200 Australian sheep
a distance of 10,000 miles to
their new home in Israel.
Dr. Goldberg, who will devote
his full time to his sheep ven-
ture, believes that Israel c a n
build a stock of a half million
sheep in a few years, yielding
millions of dollars worth of wool
each year.
Your friend, MIRIAM.
