N Samuel's 'The Devil That Failed
Is Modern Gulliver Adventure Tale

THE JEWISH NEWS-19

Friday, November 21, 1952

The genius of Maurice Sam- that reconstructs for moderns
uel once again gains eminence the Gulliver story of the Lilli-
in his latest work, "The Devil putians. And it holds the
reader's attention because it is
constructed in the fascinating
style which always distinguished
the writing of MauriCe Samuel.

New JWV Commander
Pledges Aid to NCRAC

MAURICE SAMUEL
That Failed," a "half-thriller,
half-parable" that is described
by his publisher (Alfred A.
Knopf, 591 Madison, NY22) as
"the ominous adventure of a
20th century Gulliver."
In this fantastic tale, Alan
Cleaver finds himself suddenly
as having grown from an under
6-foot height and under 200-
pound weight to 13 feet in
height, 2200 pounds in weight.
He cannot return to family, in
order to avoid the shock of his
gigantism. He is kept incommun-
icado by a group of captors who
are unusually small compared
with him and who inform him
that he is being treated in their
sanatorium.
But as he ponders over his
plight he discovers that he was
kidnapped by midgets who try
to impress upon him that he
suffers from "delayed gigan-
tism." He learns that they want-
ed him for their midgets' exhibi-
tion. In the course of their dom-
ination over him, the midget
scientist Sertorus informs him,
after he complains that he re-
mains hungry after his meal,
that he was just fed "a pound
of cereal with a pint of cream,
two dozen eggs, 12 ounces of
butter, a pound and a half of
bread, about a gallon of coffee,
six ounces of sugar . . . "
The world suddenly became
unreal to him. He began to feel
like a freak. His clothes appeared
different in texture. Yet, when
he convinced himself, by a pen-
dulum test, that he was the vic-
tim of a plot, he acted firmly.
He managed to escape from the
predicament, but only after he
threatened the deluded midget
"scientist" and asserted himself
to his kidnappers.
It is a' witty adventure story

Finds Indicate Negev
Was Densely Settled

JERUSALEM; (JTA)--Proof
that the Beersheba region
was densely populated 5,000
years ago has been un-
earthed by an archaeological
party headed by Jean Perrot
of the French National Cen-
ter for Scientific Research.
The excavators have un-
covered remnants of a village
of stone walled houses with
crude fireplaces. Among the
potherds discovered were
painted pottery and bits of
copper which indicate that
the inhabitants of the
lage 'exploited copper mines
and used copper implements.
The racial stock of the in-
habitants of the ancient vil-
lage has not been established.
