New Era in Good-Will Movement'

. Action, Concrete Expression
Urged at Conference of NCCJ

By PHILIP SLOMOVITZ

WASHINGTON, (AJP) — On
the eve of the 25th anniversary
of the National Conference of
Christians and Jews, at the an-
nual convention here on Sun-
day. Monday and Tuesday, a
new trend was in evidence : the
inauguration of serious efforts
for concrete expressions in de-
fense of basic human rights and
for action in support of the
good-will movement.

NCCJ leaders and their
guests, at a number of semin-
ars went on record favoring
bold expressions in support of
social justice, the elimination
of prejudice and the enforce-
ment of hard-won American
principles of equality for peo-
ples of all faiths and races.

The delegates paused for a
minute of silent prayer in trib-
ute to the memory of Dr. Chaim
Weizmann.
Dr. Abba Hillel Silver, in a
powerfin address on Monday,
called for self-application of the
idea of justice before it is ad-
vocated for others. Dr. Silver
saw the emergence of "an amaz-
ing new pattern of life" and as-
serted there was no reason for
despair.
"More is being done in our

day for the improvement of
the status of the common man
than in any five generations,"
the eminent Cleveland rabbi
declared. He emphasized that
"we must remain free at home
. . . we must not take our
heritage of freedom for grant-
ed . . . we must not permit the
intrusion of witch-hunting ...
we should resist all forms of
bigotry . . . Our people should
be educated in the techniques
of propaganda in order to
combat bigotry."

we all know, is basic to a true
democratic way of life . .
"It is no accident that America,
supremely the land of Liberty, is
also supremely the land of Sci-
ence. Why? Because science is
an attribute of liberty—a sym-
bol of man's freedom to pursue
the investigation of the universe
without fear of social or poli-
tical or religious reprisals. From
that point of view science con-
notes an open mind and funda-
mental tolerance in the relations
between man and man

"The educational activities
of the National Conference of
Christians and Jews are of
prime importance . . . In the
splendid work of the Confer-
ence we see the reflection of
the Christian ideal—Peace on
Earth to Men of Good Will,'
which harmonizes perfectly
with the most oft repeated
word in the Hebrew language
`Shalom'—meaning—PEACE."

President Truman was com-
pelled by official duties to can-
cel his address that was sched-
uled for the Tuesday afternoon
session.
However, Thomas E. Braniff,
Catholic co-chairman, presented
him an award for service as
honorary chairman of Brother-
hood Week, from 1945 to 1952.
The award was accepted for the
President by Secretary of In-
terior Oscar Chapman.
The Conference received a
message from President - Elect
Eisenhower accepting the hon-
orary Brotherhood Week chair-
manship for 1952.
Benson Ford of Detroit,
Thomas E. Braniff and Roger W.
Straus were re-elected national
co-chairmen of the Conference.
Mr. Straus continues a continu-,
ous tenure as Jewish national
co-chairman since 1928 when
the Conference was founded.
A national campaign goal of
$3,500,000 was accepted by the
NCCJ board to finance the work
of 62 regional offices, including
the Detroit Round Table office.
The 500 delegates were guests
of Mrs. Harry S. Truman at a
tea at the White House Monday
afternoon.

In a speech at the same
luncheon meeting, Governor
Theodore Roosevelt McKeldin of
Maryland deplored generalities
in good will efforts as a "nega-
tion of virtues." He urged spon-
sors of the movement not to be
smug and asked for "vigorous
espousal of action—not a mere
bid for friendship." He declared
that religion or race must not
be a determining factor in ad-
vancing just rights to people
and asked that priority be given ADL to Take Active Part
to merit.

Governor Mc Beldin said
that although there are only
80,000 Jews in a population
of 1,000,000 in Baltimore he
named four Jews as judges in
a field of six because he recog-
nized their merit.
He announced anew that
next month he will name
Simon Sobeloff of Baltimore
(brother of Isidore Sobeloff
of Detroit) as Chief Justice of
the Maryland Court of Ap-
peals. He first made this de-
cision known during his visit
in Israel last Passover to-
gether with Mr. a n d Mrs.
Simon Sobeloff.

Attacking the McCarran im-
migration law as unjust, - Gov-
ernor McKeldin urged that peo-
ple speak up against it.
"Good will," he said, "should
find concrete expression or it
will prove meaningless." He ad-
vocated participation in political
action by minorities.
Governor McKeldin criticized
"the small number" of Jews who
oppose the sale of Israel bonds
in this country and excortiated
those who falsely raise the ex-
aggerated "double allegiance"
issue.
In one of the most stirring
addresses, Brig. Gen. David Sar-
noff, president of Radio Corpor-
ation of America, speaking at
the closing session an Tuesday,
declared:
"Men must learn to live and
work together or all will perish
together. This concept of the
relationship between men is not
new. The ideal of brotherhood
has pervaded the teachings of
all religious thinkers — Chris-
tians, Mohammedans and Jews
alike—whose moral and philoso-
phic precepts form the bedrock
of our modern institutions and
Culture. And this concept; as
