Everyone came to the party—
all. the aunts and uncles and
cousins, the grandparents, the
new neighbors, the old neigh-
bors. Everyone came - to help
Danny and Judy and mother
and daddy dedicate their new
home.
Near the doorway mother set
up a table. She covered it with
an embroidered-.cloth and on it
she set a golden-brown challah
and some salt, the ice decanter,
father's silver K i d d u s h cup,
their family Bible and their
beautiful new Mezuzah.
Most of the guests had al-
ready arrived when Danny,
looking through the window,
called "Here he tomes, Mother,
here comes the rabbi now."
The rabbi came in and greeted
everyone. Then it was time for
the ceremony. The family gath-
ered near the doorway. "Let us
recite together," said the rabbi,
"our traditional blessing for fes-
tive occasions." He led them in
saying "Shehecheyanu."
Father cut a slice of challah,
dipped it in salt and said the
prayer for bread. He gave a
taste to mother and the chil-
dren. Next came the blessing
over wine.
When all had tasted the wine,
they were ready to hang the
Mezuzah. The nail was already
in the wall and it was easy for
the rabbi to put up the little sil-
ver cylinder. As he did so, he
said "This ancient symbol of the
Mezuzah speaks to us of the One
God, of our need to love Him
and to. obey His law. We have
God in our hearts when our
home - thus bears witness to His
holy presence."

AT AMERICA'S DOORPOST
Did you ever think, boys and
girls, that the Statue of Liberty
is to the United States what the
Mezuzah is to the Jewish home?
Just as the Mezuzah on our door-
post is a reminder of God with-,
in our homes, so the Statue of
Liberty in New York Harbor,. at
the doorway to America, is a re- .
minder of the freedom within
our country.
Almost as famous; as the Lady
of the Lamp herself is the poem
engraved at the base of the
statue. Did you know that it
was written by a Jewess?
Emma Lazarus grew up in
New York City. She was well-
read,, well-educated; she wrote
fine poetry. But she knew little
of Judaism and cared little about
the Jewish people. Then came
the times of the pogroms in
Eastern Europe. Thousands of
Jews came to this country to es-
cape the cruelties of Russian
laws. This great movement of
Jews to her country aroused the
interest of Emma Lazarus and
she began to study her own peo-
ple, history, literature and lang-
uage.
Then her writing became dif-
ferent. She wrote her greatest
poems on Jewish subjects. You
very likely sing one of her poems
about the Maccabean heroes at
Hanukah time — "Kindle the
Taper."
And then she wrote what
many regard •as her best poem.
It was a "Thank You" to Ameri-
ca for offering freedom to op-
pressed Jewry. "The New Colos-
sus" she called it. And it was
selected for inscription on a
bronze tablet at the base of the
Statue of Liberty. Part of it
reads:
"Give 'me your tired, your poor,
Your hudled masses yearning to
• breathe free,
. I lifted my lamp beside the
golden door."
This is the inscription Emma
Lazarus wrote for the "Mezu-
zah" on the doorpost of Ameri-
ca, home of liberty.

dence that President - elect
Dwight D. Eisenhower will con-

by Rabbi Irving Miller, president
of the Zionist Organization of
America, at a dinner at the
Waldorf Astoria Hotel tendered
in his honor by leaders of the
Israel bond drive.
"In President-elect Eisenhow-
er," Rabbi Miller declared, "the
Jewish people have a champion,
and the State of Israel an un-
derstanding friend. The Presi-
dent-elect was the liberator of
the Jewish survivors of the Nazi
concentration camps."
Abba E. Eban, the Israel Am-
bassador, told the assembly 118
was confident that the new Eis-
enhower administration would
continue close cooperation and
friendship with Israel.
The Israel envoy declared that
"the roots of American-Israel
friendship are firmly set in the
soil of a common historic exper-
ience, a common devotion to
democracy and a common al-
legiance to ancient spiritual
truths."
