Dr. Weizmann, Who
Matched Mountains
-Jewry sits in mourning over its
most illustrious son:
Dr. Chaim Weizmann was more
than the President of Israel. He
Was one of mankind's great scien-
tists. He was the guide of the
movement that gave courage to
the Jewish people in time of most
tprious stress. He was the creator
'-fif ideas which will live indelibly
sn Jewish-history.
When news came on Sunday
morning of his passing, after an
.11Iness that lasted many months,
Christians as well as Jews lament-
ed the passing of‘ a great states-
Man, a great chemist, a man who
was revered among many nations.
He was the George Washington
of twentieth century Jewry and was
acclaimed as such by the Govern-
Ment of the United States. Our
Government knew how to value the
Merits of .a man who helped create
new . nation. Our Government's
action of going on record as the
first nation to recognize the new
nation of Israel, by order of Presi-
dent Truman, was in great measure
Inspired by the works of Dr., Weiz-
Mann_
No task was too menial for him
Itrt the effort to re-create Israel. 'He
met with the greatest and the
humblest in Christendom to con
since them of the justice of his
cause. By the same token, he met
with the people in the high places
and the low places in Jewish ranks
to win them over for Zionism. He
propagated his cause among the
Jewish masses and pleaded for the
Zionist idea with the non-Zionist
Jews. The Prophet's admonition-
"Tzion be-mishpat tipodeh" —
"Zion shall be redeemed with jus-
tice" — was his ideal, and he
achieved it for himself and Israel.
There are many famous stories
about this great man, and one of
them merits repetition at this time.
In the days when Great Britain
made much of the "absorptive ca-
pacity" argument while curtailing
the migration of Jews into the
Land of Israel, Lord Peel visited
him in his chemical laboratory in
Rehovoth, his Israel home. While
Observing him in action, he asked,
"What are you doing?" Promptly,
Dr. Weizmann replied, "I am cre-
ating absorptive capacity.". There,
too, he succeeded, through his po-
litical efforts,- but also by means of
new inventions, new industrial un-
dertakings, the creation of the He-
brew University and the Weizmann
Institute of Science.
He did not strive for personal
rewards, and because he did not
seek honors the greatest honor of
oil was accorded him in his real-
ized dream: the Presidency of
Israel.
' Zecher tzaddik livracha!
The memory of this great man
