Clemency Asked
For Rosenbergs

NEW YORK—Representatives
of 50,1000 Americans of every race
and creed, including outstand-
ing leaders in every field, filed an
amicus curiae brief with the
Supreme Court in Washington,
urging a new trial be given
Ethel a n d Julius Rosenberg,
who are facing death on
the charge of treason. An
appeal f o r clemency h a s
been addressed to President
Truman.
Presented to the Supreme
Court by Joseph Brainin, chair-
man of the Committee to Se-
cure Justice in the Rosenberg
Case, and Rev. Amos Murphy
of Boston, the sig. stories to
the brief included Dr. W. E. B.
DuBois, Negro historian; Rabbi
Abraham Cronbach; Nelson Al-
gren, novelist; Brig. Gen. Henry
Clay Newcomer (Ret.) ; Rabbi
Dr. Meyer Sharff; Olin Downes,
music critic of the New York
Times; Mrs. Mary Church
Terrell; Rev:- Harry F. Ward,
Professor Emeritis of Christian
Theology at the Union Theol-
ogical Seminary, former chair-
man of the American Civil
Liberties. Union; Rabbi Abraham
Horvitz; A. L. Pomerantz; Rabbi
Moskey P. Mann; Rabbi T. A.
Greenberg; Dorothy Day, editor
of the Catholic Worker; Rabbi
Jacob Hoffman: Howard Fast
novelist; Dr. Joseph B. Furst;
Judge Norval K. Harris, Indiana.
Editor's Note: A paid adver-
tisement appearing in this issue
invites support for the move-
ment to secure clemency for the
Rosenbergs. We publish it out
of fairness to its sponsors who
believe that the sentences met-
ed out to the Rosen.,ergs in
peace time is extreme and that
there is -nothing on record in
this country or in England,
where similar trials have taken
place, to match it. The prose-
cutor, judge and many witnesses
at the Rosenberg trial were
Jews, but by the same token
Catholics, Protestants and Jews
have joined in urging clemency
for the convicted pair.
