A Statement by Abba Hillel Silver

On the eve of the election, Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver issued this

statement, through national headquarters of the -Zionist Organi-

zation of America: .
."The statements on. Israel which have been issued by both
candidates for the Presidency of the United States serve, to
,strengthen the conviction that the friendship between. America
and Israel will become even closer and stronger in the months
and years to come.
- _

"Our country's support for Israel has always been bi-parti-
san in character, and the declarations made during the past
week by General Eisenhower and Governor Stevenson have pro-
vided striking evidence that this bi-partisan policy will be con--
tinued in the future.- There is clearly no difference' of opinion
between the RepubliCan and DemocraticParties on the question
of friendship and assistance for Israel."

.

,

This, of course, tallies with the - position of the American
Zionist Council, It reprebents the over-all non-partisan attitude
of national Jewish movements whose leaders are concerned that
aid to Israel should not be curtailed, that the pro-Israel attitude
of our Government should remain the offiCial policy of American
leadership. •-• ,•

Jews, in Ali Camps

A study of the Jewish press will prove that we were correct in
stating,- weeks before the election, that Jews were to be found
in all political camps. There are Jewish Republicans and Dezno-
crats and you'll find Jews who backed the Progressive, Socialist
and Socialist Lab& Party tickets.
Study the advertisements that were inserted in behalf of both
parties, and you'll find that Jewish names were appended to
the lists of supporters of both Stevenson' and Eisenhower. Locally,
the president of the Michigan. Zionist . Region backed Stevenson
and the president of the Zionist Organization of Detroit sup-
ported Eisenhower, but many Labor Zionists were in the Stevenson
camp. The president of a leading Reform Temple was for Eisen-
hower, but presidents of other Temples and synagogues were in
the Stevenson camp. It is as.we had indicate early' in the cam-
paign; the division among Americans is not on racia? but on the
same lines as those that divide all voters. That's how all Ameri-
cans were divided: that's how Jews were lined up.

Preserving a Treasure

The announced formation of a committee of scholars to corn,
pile, with a view to publishing, an academic dictionary of the
Yiddish language marks a major step in preserving the national
treasure developed by our perished pebple in Europe over a
period of creativity dating _back as long as eight centuries or
mere.
The decimation of six million of our people in Europe is
a calamity which will torture every sensitive Jew to the very
end of time. We of this generation who were painfill witnesses
to the slaughter have felt its impact in flesh and in heart, but
because of that very proximity perhaps we are lacking both the
strength and vision to grasp the enormity of the tragedy in.
terms of its effect on our future course alongside the world's
path. •
What has been lost — 10 centuries of Jewish life and creat-
ivity on the European continent can neither be reprieved
nor replenished. The unique pattern will never be recaptured.
A civilization has passed into *the- ages, to live only, even as the
dead,• in memory and in monument and in inscription.
The dead will not return.. Nor will the culture they built
with hand and tongue and piety. .Their song. and legend and
heritage, lie buried in the myriads of untombed graves,

Devil '.Quotes Scripture

• Only this time it was not the Bible he quoted but William
Zukerman's "Jewish Newsletter." Hitler's admirer and, friend, Dr.
Jamali of Iraq, was engaging in what the Israeli delegate Arthur
Lurie later described as the first voice of Nazism ever heard in
the 'United Nations. -The Arab gentleman, who in 1938 arranged
far a youth delegation of his country to attend a Nazi party rally
at Nuremberg and who later formed an Iraq youth movement
along the Hitlerite pattern,•WaS thundering against Israel and
Zionism while weeping that Israel had subjected the Arabs to
greater pain and agony and misery than Hitler inflicted upon the
Jews..: And to buttress his ease against Israel he quoted editorial
material -from the so-called "Jewish-Newsletter."
