By ORT; Dr. Haber Support of Pro-Israel Program
Elected President
After a 45-minute conference quality of the work of

with General Dwight Eisenhower
at 60 Morningside Drive, Dr. Ab-
ba Hillel Silver, speaking at a
press conference in New York,
commended the Republican can-
didate for his pro-Israel stand
as "emancipator of Nazi perse-
cuted minorities of Europe."
Dr. Silver made public an ex-
change of correspondence with
the candidate. General Eisen-
hower informed him that he
was "in complete and hearty
accord with the statement on
Israel in the Republican plat-
form" and presented his view
as follows:
"You will recall how vigorously
and effectively Republican Sen-
ators and Congressmen, Gover-
nors and State Legislators sup-
ported the cause which w a s
never viewed by them as a parti-
san issue, but as one which com-
mended itself to all right-think-
ing people because of its inher-
ent justice and as the right so-
lution for one of mankind's
grave and pressing problems.
"As Commander of the Allied
Armies during the last war, I
had the fullest opportunity to
‘obeserve closely the tragic con-
ditions of the war ravaged and
Nazi decimated Jewish commun-
ities of Europe. It will be one
of the enduring satisfactions of
my life that I was privileged to
lead the forces of the free world,
which finally crushed the brutal
regime of Hitler, with its re-
sponsibility for all those un-
speakable atrocities. Our forces
saved the remnant of the Jewish
people of Europe for a new life
and a new hope in the reborn
land of Israel.
"Along with all men of good

they are so energetically prose-
cuting. I also know something
of their besetting difficulties
and of the problems, both polit-
ical and economic, which con-
front them. Foremost among
t h e s_e is that of establishing
peace with the Arab world. Such
a peace would be a boon both to
Israel and to the Arab states.
Such peace in the Middle East
is essential to the free world.
Every encouragement should be
given to facilitate direct nego-
tiations between the State of Is-
rael and its A r a b neighbors
Whose independence, , freedom
and prosperity are equally the
hope and wish of the American
people.
"One of the serious stumbling
blocks in the way is the prob-
lem of the Arab refugees. In my
judgment, both statesmanship
and humanity dictate that these
unfortunate refugees should, as
rapidly as possible, be assisted
with adequate means honorably
to reintegrate themselves in the
neighboring Arab countries
wherever their reabsorption in
Israel is either not feasible or
practical.
"The State of Israel has given
every indication - of being a pro-
gressive democracy which is de-
sirous of cooperating with the
free world in defense of human
freedom and against totalitarian
aggression. It is in the interest
of the United States and of all
peace loving nations that polit-
ical and economic aid to es-
tablish their own security should
be extended to Israel and to all
countries in the Middle E a s t
which are similarly intentioned,
to an extent consistent with a
sound overall mutual aid pro-

that we are not only a Zionist
party; we are also a Labor par-
ty. And we have always regarded
not only as our right but as
our duty to second our advo-
cacy of social justice in Israel
with a similar stand and simi-
lar action in the United States."
Furthermore, the LZOA as-
serted, the whole matter ha's
nothing to do with the Ameri-
can Zionist Council. The LZOA
said that in regard to Zionist
matters the organization goes
along with other groups in re-
lation to declared policies in ma-
jority opinions.
"This," insisted the LZOA,
"was not negated in the action
taken by our . Central Commit-
tee in endorsing Stevenson, for
the resolution was careful to as-
sert that statements concerning
Israel were in the platforms of
both parties, and, by implica-
tion, that we favor, as does the
American Zionist Council, a bi-
partisan approach to diplomatic
and economic help for Israel."
Louis Lipsky, chairman of AZC
answered the LZOA charges by
stating that "it was hard to un-
derstand the action of LZOA
challenging the right of the
American Zionist Council to con-
sider the LZOA endorsement . ."
Accusing the LZOA of "beg-
ging the question," Lipsky in-
sisted that the AZC has the
right• at least '"to regret" the ac-
tion of the Labor Zionist Or-
ganization.
He pointed out that by unani-
mous agreement for almost • a
decade the AZC has maintained
a bi-partisan approach in con-
nection with public relations fo-
cusing on the Washington
scene. He argued that this policy
has been accepted in fact by all
Zionists who have been parti-
cipating in. this • action "with
great devotion."
"Conceding the right.. claim-
ed by the - Labor Zionist • Organ-
ization, we submit that it is
estopped from exerting that
right - by reason of its voluntary
membership on the Council, its
active participation in framing
the policies of the Council and
by its recorded affirmative vote
on the policy we liave been fol-
lowing,"- Lipsky declared.
