It was in 1940, after he had

for eight years, that the Nazis
decided to change the name of
the orchestra, name.d for Edou-
ard Colonne, a Jew, that Paray
resigned. He resigned again from
the Marseilles Orchestra when
Jewish members were banned by
the Nazis.
His greatest effrontery to the
Nazis, however, was delivered on
May 17, 1942, in Lyons. On May
16, the Berlin Philharmonic,
played a ,propaganda concert of
German music. On the following
day, Paray and other members
of the French Resistance move-
ment rented the same hall. .
On the program that evening
was "The Sorcerer's Apprentice"
by the Jewish composer, Paul
Dukas, At the end of the concert
Paray asked the audience to join
ha- the singing of the "Marseil-
laise," which they did with tears

Paray then became a "volun-
tary exile" in Monte Carlo where,
at the invitation of Prince Louis
X of Monaco, he directed the
opera until liberation.
His debut in this country was
lot 1939 with the New York Phil-
harmonic. Since then he has
appeared also with the Boston,
Cincinnati and Pittsburgh Sym-
phonies.
