Stories for
Our Roys
and Girls

Hello Boys and Girls:
The Jewish year opens with
much excitement for all of us.
We find ourselves celebrating
one holiday after another in
rapid succession beginning with
Rosh Hashanah. That is fol-
lowed almost immediately by
Yom Kippur, the Day of Atone-
ment, which we will observe
Sunday night and Monday. I
thought you might like to know
something about Yom Kippur in
ancient days in Palestine . .
* * *
The Yom Kippur ceremonies
- began at dawn in the ancient
Temple of Jerusalem. For seven
whole days, the High Priest had
remained in the Temple, never
leaving its walls for any business
or pleasure, not even to see his
family. He spent an entire week
in study and prayer to prepare
himself for the awesome day to
come.
As the sun's first rays shone
over the Judean hills, his assist-
ants, the Levites, came to the
High Priest and dressed him in
snow-white robes. Then he went
into the huge hall of worship
where the people were assem-
bled. As they watched, the High
Priest perforined the rites of
sacrifice. (This practice of sac-
rificing animals on sacred occa-
sions is very ancient, boys and
girls. It has not been engaged
in for hundreds of years, by the
Jews or any other civilized
people.)
Three times, the High Priest
offered a sacrifice, once for him-
self, once for all the priests, and
once on behalf of all the people. 8—THE JEWISH NEWS
Each time he recited a prayer of
Friday, September 26, 1952
confession, to which the priests
• and all the people responded
with the chant: "Blessed be His
glorious name forever and ever."
And the High Priest said: "Ye
shall be clean," meaning that
the sins of the people would be
AVAILABLE
forgiven.
