Man of God to Man of Devil

The crackpots who are immersed in anti-Jewish, anti-Negro
and anti-Catholic activities are too degraded .a . breed to hearken
to rebuke. Theirs is the sensitivity of the snake which knows only
how to lash out poisonously until he kills or is killed.
• A letter from a C a t h o 1 i c priest to Gerald Winrod,
notorious priest of hate, compels me to return again to the re-
pulsive subject. Fr. Robert E. Carson of Philadelphia, a Catho-
lic . priest associated with the South East Catholic High School
in the city of brotherly love, recently received some of the filth
literature with which Winrod is dunging the country. But in-
stead of throwing the stuff into the wastebasket where it be-
longed, our Catholic friend decided to pen a note of denuncia-
tion. Mincing no words, he lashed out against the Jew baiters
and rabble rousers, accusing them of using racial and religious
hatred as a means to self-enrichment. There is such depth of
feeling, eloquence and sincerity to the letter, that it defies de-
scription other than through reprinting. Here is the letter:
"In today's mail I received frorri your group some literature
with reference to Communism and the Jewish people. After read-
ing this trash I decided to let you know just how I feel, as a
Catholic priest, about Jew baiters and rabble rousers like yourself.
"In the first place the so-called 'facts' in your pamphlet en-
titled 'The Philip Drew Case' are not facts at all but distortions
and misstatements. I feel that you are fully aware of this. As a
graduate historian and the holder of a masters degree in U. S.
history I know that your 'nonsense' about the 'Talmudic plot' to
overthrow the government of this country is just, to put it suc-
cintly, so much tripe. The Jewish people have by their sweat and
genius done a great deal to make our country the great nation
that it is:From the beginning of our history they have worked
alongside Catholics and Protestants for advancement of Ameri-
canism. You, on the other hand, and others of your ilk—like Ger-
ald Smith, Charles Coughlin and many more—have done nothing
to promote American ideas; rather, you are working to tear down
the bond of brotherhood among our people. You want to exploit
differences in religion, to use racial and religious hatred in order
to make money, by selling your grubby little pamphlets and dis-
graceful magazine. • .
"In this diabolical work, Sir, I wish you all the failure in the
world. May (hod strike you with His chastisement and bring your
efforts to set American against American to a speedy and un-
glorious end. I suppose that you, who profess to be a minister of
God (you are in fact nothing of the sort), open your Bible and
read I John, beginning to end, then kneel down and acknowledge
your sin and begin to live like the christian you pretend to be."
This refreshing advice from a man so deeply steeped in re- •
ligion cannot possibly move the depraved and despicable hate
peddlers. But its significance, we are sure, will be appreciated by
the millions of decent Americans of all faiths and colors. •
By reading this letter on his television prograin, -Barry Gray
has rendered an inestimable service to the cause of decency,
democracy and true religion.
