An American girl who only
this year graduated from the
University of Cincinnati is help-
ing to solve many of Israel's
dietary problems.
Peninah Gootman, a native of
Cincinnati, completed work for
a degree in dietetics in February
and in March left to enroll in
the Hebrew University in Jeru-
salem, but she abandoned her
studies because of the pressing
demand for help in Israel's
nutritional problems. She is
now working full-time for the
Institute for Nutrition in Israel.
Her task is great, since she
must lecture to women from
many. Eastern countries—Persia,
Yemen, Algeria and Morocco.
These women neither r e a d,
write nor speak the same lan-
guage.
One problem encountered
when Miss Gootman was lectur-
ing to a group of Yemenite
women was convincing them
that cups of flour were the same
as bags of flour. Five cups of
flour meant nothing, so she sub-
stituted paper bags and demon-
strated the quantities in terms
of the sack.
The young Cincinnatian trav-
els in a 25-mile radius around
Jerusalem, h e r headquarters,
and in a week's time may lecture
to a group of young married
women on how to prepare salads,
how to prepare a meal and how
to entertain guests. Then she
will meet with young mothers
and advise them on nutrition for
their babies.
Just recently Miss Gootman
was appointed lecturer in diete-
tics at a training school for
nurses in Jerusalem. She is one
of the youngest people in the
new state to hold a degree in
nutrition from an Arrierican uni-
versity.
