sources complaineof the rough
time that pro Max Zaslofsky was
having with the New York Knick-
erbockers. At one point in the
season Zaslofsky was being used
very infrequently, particularly
on road trips, and several key
people maintained that he was
being discriminated a g a i n s t.
Zaslofsky did much better to-
ward the end of the season, but
he was considering the poSsibil-
ity• of retiring .. .
Several Jewish stars won rec-
ognition in the 1951 season and
in this season. In the 1951 cam-
paign, Saul Rogovin, pitcher for
the Chicago White Sox, finished
with the best earned run aver-
age in the American League.
This year Al Rosen of the Cleve-
land Indians, who did not do
so well at bat last year, came
back with a sensational per-
that established him
as one of the league's leading
hitters right at the beginning of
the season. Al was named to
the All7Star teams.

what was another important
s p o r t s development. Brandeis
ran into criticism for schedul-

from those who disagreed with

the policy of Brandeis' entering
into a full-scale sports program
that began to take on an aspect
of commercialism.
New Year Best Wishes
It was pointed out that such
a move was unhealthy for the
university in view of the corrupt
-Status of athletics in other
American universities. Brandeis
took the matter into considera-

basic change in policy. Spokes-

men for the university contend
that their athletic program is,

Happy New Year

It was an exciting story right
from the beginning, complete
with touches of suspense. First
came the political difficulties re-
sulting from the failure of Is-
rael's rival sports organizations
to get together for a unite d
Olympic effort. For a while it
was anybody's guess as to
whether there would be any Is-
raeli Olympic team. Then, after
much negotiation, unity was
reached and a committee farmed
in accordance with the regula-
tions set down by International
Olympic authorities.
The stage was set for build-
ing a team. Months of work
were required before Iry Mond-
schein, American c.o a c h who
went to Israel to train the Olym-
pic team, and Tubby Raskin,
basketball mentor who had the
job of training Israel's cage
squad, had athletes capable of
competing in Finland.
The U.S. Committee for Sports
in Israel also made a vital con-
tribution to Israel's Olympic
participation through r a ising
money for traveling expenses.
When the team finally com-
petqd against the athletes from
countries throughout the world,
it was a proud unit that had
overcome a multitude of ob-
stacles. Israeli athletics h a d
taken on an international char-
acter .

Accusations of anti-Semit-
ism in athletics flared in ten-:
nis and basketball during the
past year. Dick • Savitt, who
had established hiniself as one
of the world's leading tennis
players through his capturing
of the Wimbeldon and Austra-
lian titles, appeared to be one
of the most pronii§ing athletes
for the U.S. Davis. Cup team.
How eve r, Savitt was not
named to the squad.
Sportswriters hammered out
their criticisms against his
being snubbed. It was pointed
out that tennis is a sport in
which discrimination is known
to run rampant because of the
country club set-up of the
game. Savitt later began to
decline seriously in the qualeity
of his game and fans raiSed
the question of whether all of
the difficulty he had encoun-
tered had lefii a mark on his
playing.
In basketball,
informed
