for prayer at waterways in time of need. The Midrashim claim

that the Lord appeared to many of the prophets at waterways.
The Talmud (Horyoth 12a) claims that kings were always anoint-

ed near springs of water. Rosh Hashanah being a holiday when
the Lord is recognized as King over all the earth, it is perhaps

fitting that the King of the Universe be given his due allegiance
at a waterway. Waterways are symbolic of washing away one's
sins and bear the idea of eternity of time in its flow on this earth

This custom is sometimes related to the passage in Nehemiah
which asks that G-d "shake out every man who performeth not
his promise" (Nehemiah 5:13). Man seeks to throw off the selfish
motives that lead him to sin rather than being shaken off him-
self. Thus he shakes the crumbs from his pocket as a sign: of
casting away thoughts that mislead him.

The rabbis relate that on a certain day of emergency for • the
people of Israel many prayers were recited, but to no avail. Finally,
the great Rabbi Akiba came forth and proclaimed "Our Father,
Our King we have no King beside Thee—Our Father, Our King
have pity upon us for Thy sake." Immediately the rains came.
It seems, according to some, that Rabbi Akiba was the author of
this series of petitions. Whatever the case may be, this series
has always been used on the High Holidays, as well as on fast
days, to indicate that this simple series where the Lord is looked
upon as Father and King, and asked for mercy, has been a suc-
cessful formula for prayer in time of emergency.
