New Year's Greetings and
Best Wishes to All .. .

began generally after Labor
Day.
Gorge Washington University
has an outstanding player in
Bob Gutt, who is rated a good
chance to win Southern Confer-
ence recognition. Gutt is a key
tackle in GW's five-man line.
Bob seemed headed for SouthL
ern Conference honors last sea-
son, but got a bad break. In the
second game tf the campaign —
a contest with Virginia—Bob
suffered a iractured elbow that
put him out of commission and
dealt a blow to the GW squad.
For a tackle, Bob is a pretty
small guy. He's 5 feet 10 inches
tall and weighs 190 pounds. Dur-
L l ng his• first year on the fresh-
man squad Bob played on of-'
fense, but ever since he began
seeing action with the varsity,
he has specialized in defense.
Bruce Shine, a six footer
weighing 200 pounds, is sched-
uled to be a center on the Uni-
versity of Iowa eleven. Shine,
who hails from Spencer, Iowa, is
only a sophomore. This season
will therefore be an important,
one in determining his future
g ridiron role for Iowa.
A newcomer to the Princeton
University team is end Harry
Berkowitz of Woodstock, N. Y.
This will mark the first year of
varsity ball for Berkowitz, who
is a sophomore. Nineteen years
old, he stands six-feet, one and
a half inches tall, and weighs
195 pounds. •
• The University of Delaware
this year -is without one of its
stars of last season, Cy' Kaplo-
witz, who played tackle. Cy,
whose home, is Linden, New Jer-
sey, was graduated. A number
of other universities will be op-
erating without the services of
key Jewish players who turned
in good performances last year.

princetbn University replied
the following way to JTA's
gridiron q u e r y: "We feel
strongly that an. individual's
religious faith is strictly an in-
dividual matter, a matter of
deep concern to himself, to his
.,family and to no one else.
Because of this conviction on
our part, we frankly prefer
not to sere en Princeton's
squad in verifying any of its
member's religious beliefs."

Brandeis University, in a sit-
uatidn similar to other univer-
sities that did not hold spring
training is racing against time
to get its football team in shape.
The opening game is practically
around the c or n e r—Saturday
night, Sept. 27,. against the Uni-
versity of Bridgeport. It will take
some intense drilling to make up
for lost time. The work is dou-
bly difficult because 'of the need
to break in so many newcomers
to replace seasoned players from
last year who are no longer
around.

Baseball note: Should the
Cleveland Indians make it over
the Yanks in the American
League race, Al Rosen will be
entitled to take a good share of
the plaudits. With the pressure
on, Al snapped out of his slump.
Al was lagging sadly and eyes
were on him to start hitting
again, since he is regarded as a
vital piece of the' Cleveland ma-
chinery. When Al finally broke
loose, he did it in grand style.
In his first week out of the dol-
drums, he rapped out two hom-
ers, including one with the
bases full, a number of extra
base clouts, and drove home a
barrage or important Cleveland
runs. He stands a chance of end-
ing the season as one of the
league's leading home run hit-
ters, as well as being a leader
in the runs-batted-in division.
