Germany's Lonely Jews
Described in 'Look'

NEW YORK—Germany's 24,000
Jews—the pitiful remnant of the
500,000 who once lived in that
country—lead the lives of lone-
liness and uncertainty, accord-
! ing to an pn-the-scene 'account
; appearing"' in the current issue
lof Look Magazine.
The average age of Germany's
Jews today is 52, and one out of
every four is past 65, the maga-
zine says. Of some 3500 Jewish
congregations before the wan,
only 106 have been reconstituted.
"Without immigration," says
Look, "only two—Berlin and Mu-
nich—are certain to exist 20
years from now."
The, article, called "Germany's
Lonely Jews," is written by
Look's European Editor, William
Attwood, and says tha,t:

1 - 01 all these Jews in Germany, only
10 per cent are gainfully employed.
More than 60 per cent are wholly de-
pendent on eharjty in one form or an-
other. And almost all have one thing
in common: Try as they will, they • cari-
not sponge away the memories of 12
years of Hitlerism.
2—Jews are still uncomfortable in Ger-
many. For example: "Four Jewish DPs
who applied for work at the Bavarian
State Labor Office this spring found
themselves assigned to *jobs with the
same contractor who employed them as
slave laborers during the war. A coin-
cidence? Not very likely."
3—A few Jews are getting along well,
relatively speaking.' Among those in
prominent positions today are -three
Bundestag deputies, the vice president
of the supreme court, the rector of
Frankfurt University and the secretary
of the mighty Federation of Gergian
Trade 'Unions.
4—The Germans can be divided into
three classes in their attitude toward
Jews, 30 per cent neurotic, unrecon-
structed Nazis; 10 per cent sympathetic
to Jews; 60 per cent indifferent and
ready to conform to any policy 'decreed
from the top.

Therefore, says Look, so long
as Germany's leaders are men
of good Will—as they are today—
the Jews have no reason to be
afraid.
