The name of Isidor Bush is not generaiiy known, but it repre-
sents pioneering in American Jewish life. He was a viticulturist,
the founder of the first Jewish weekly in this country—Israels
Herold published in German—and a leader in Jewish communal
activities and American politics.
Born in Prague, in 1822, he came' to this country in 1848.
when, as a staunch liberal, he had to flee his native land. He
learned the printing business in his father's plant in Vienna,
helped set up an edition of the Talmud at the age of 15 and at
18 was the youngest publisher in Vienna. He edited important
works and introduced to the public the Hungarian historian, Leo-
pold Loew.
Upon his arrival in New York, he opened a book store and
established Israels Herold which existed only three months.
He
moved to - St. Louis where he prospered as operator of a general
store, became a partner in the wholesale grocers' firm of Bush
and Taussig in 1853 and in 1857 founded People's Savings Bank,
serving as its president until 1963.
Active. in the pre-secession struggle in Missouri, General Fre-
mont named him his aide in 1861 and he was a captain until
1862. He then became general agent of St. Louis and Iron Moun-
tain Railroad, holding the position until 1868.
In 1864 he was a delegate to the Missouri Constitutional Con-
vention. He was a member of the State Board of Immigration,
1865-1877. He acquired a reputation as a viticulturist, planting
vineyards at Bushberg, near St. Louis, and issued a manual - on
grape-growing, Bushberg Catalogue, which was translated into
many languages.
He was a founder of Congregation B'ne El in St. Louis and of
the Cleveland Orphan Asylum in 1868, was grand president of St.
Louis Bnai Brith in 1872, held many other important offices and
in 1882 was vice-president of Missouri Historical Society. He died
in St. Louis in 1898.

The Editor's Needs
An Editorial in the Melrose, Wis.,
Chronicle
I It is reported that one of the
fastidious newly-married ladies
, of this town kneads bread with
I her gloves on. This incident may
be somewhat peculiar, but there
are others. The editor of this pa-
' per needs bread with his shoes
on; he needs bread with his shirt
on• he needs bread with his
'
pants on, and unless some of the
delinquent subscribers of this
"Old Rag of - Freedom" pony up
before long, he will need bread
without a damn thing on, and
Wisconsin is no Garden of Eden
in the winter time.
Sincere Best Wishes
for A Happy New Year
