The few people, including
the first Israel Minister of the
Interior, Yitzhak Gruenbaum, .
who declared themselves in
the first Israel census—as of
Jewish nationality but of no
religion, are considered freaks
and their declarations of no
consequence.

Mission schools and hospitals
operate freely among both Arabs
and Jews, and there are about
400 known Christian mission-
aries in Israel; but the Prime
Minister had to intervene to en-
able one of them, a pro-Zionist
Canadian, to broadcast on such
subjects in Hebrew although
Christian and Moslem religious
services and music are regularly
transmitted over Kol Israel on
their holidays in other lan-
guages.
While some Jewish citizens
expressed abhorrence at the "in-
quisition-like" atmosphere
which surrounded Sholem Asch's
visit early this year, the Ortho-
dox begrudged him the oppor-
tunity to declare himself a loyal,
albeit non-confirming Jew.
Meanwhile, the Agudah and
Mizrachi trends in (compulsory
free) education are fighting a
rearguard action against the
amalgamation of all state-sup-
ported schools into a single pub-
lic system giving pupils the
choice between secular and ob-
servant classes, and most reli-
gious parties demand separate
observant formations in the
Israel army. Its voluntary for-
mations are altogether rejected
by Agudah youth.

The undertaking to use gov-
ernment funds only for the
purchase of kosher meat fur-
ther reduces the scant protein
rations of Israel's population.
Price differences on frozen
meat imports may amount to
15% and over in foreign cur-
rency on regular markets and
more on special buys, and
outright gifts from abroad
must sometimes be refused.
