Ambassador Abba Eban of Is-
rael portrayed Israel bonds as a
key factor in bringing peace tp
the Middle East.
A report of Israel's program to
achieve economic stability was
presented to the conference by
Dr. JoSeph Burg, Minister of
Health for the Jewish State. Dr.
Burg said that the increase in
industrial and agricultural pro-
duction is the paramount prob-
lem facing the people of Israel.

Any resentment which the
Arab world may feel toward
the United States as a result of
American economic -aid to Is-
rael will disappear when the
Arabs realize that it is in their
interest to live at peace with
Israel, Herbert E. Gaston,
chairman of the Export-Im-
port Bank, declared in an ad-
dress to the conference earlier.
Mr. Gaston praised the lead-
ers of the Israel government
for their efforts to achieve
harmony in the Middle East.

Referring to the fact that
since the establishment of the
State of Israel in May 1948, the
Export-Import Bank has granted
loans amounting to $135,000,000
to Israel, Mr. Gaston said that
the bank "considers our invest-

Discussing the loans made to
Israel, he said that "they have
helped materially in developing
the agricultural and industrial
economy." He paid tribute to
Israel as a "brilliant pilot project

New Year's Message from
The Vaad Horabbonim

The Yoniim Noro'im, the Days of Awe, are beckoning to us
again. The month of Ellul with the S'lichos days has heralded
their coming. The sound of the Shofar has spoken to us day for
day. It brings to us a message encompassing the vast totality of
Jewish life. It reaches us as a stirring call from the remote
ranges of history, entreating us to be at one with our fathers, to
tread the eternal road of historic continuity for the Jewish People
and its faith.
With this in mind the Va'ad Horabbonim of Detroit turns to
every Jew in the community with a fervent plea to heed this call
and to translate it into terms of concrete thinking and living.
Throughout the ages the pithy phrase of our prayerbook rarely
has had greater relevance: Hayom Ha•as Olom. This is a time
of crisis that demands creative decision. Decision must mean
action that has been clearly defined for us by the theme of our
prayers on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur:
T'shuvoh
T'filloh
Ts'dokoh.

Penitential return, prayer and justice.

T'shuvoh—There is a lot which we have lost and to which
we must return. The way of life as ordained in our holy Torah
has become a vague and uncertain factor for many of us. It has
ceased to be a determining and guiding force and we have become
the poorer for it in happiness and spiritual achievement. The
pillars of the traditional Jewish home must be restored to their
form& strength. Kashrut must become a formative element in
this rebuilding process. Taharas Hamishpochoh, the sacred laws
of Jewish family life, must again form the foundation upon which
true Jewish living can become a reality.
T'filloh : Again the Jewish masses must flock to the synagogue
to pour out their hearts and gather new strength to face the
trials of our bewildering age with certainty and calmness. The
synagogue is waiting for us not only three days but every Sabbath
and all the weekdays of the year.
Ts'dokoh: To do justice is one of the cardinal postulates of
Judaism. Too often have we permitted this duty to become a
thoughtless function lacking in quantity and quality. We are
facing the stern task to do justice to our obligations as Jews. We
must do the full measure of justice to all these obligations in
the community and beyond, at home and abroad, in this country
and in Israel, the dream of the ages that, with the help of God,
has become reality.
We must do justice to the centers of Jewish learning every-
where, more specifically the Torah institutions in our own coin-.
munity. We must be ever mindful of the fact that they alone
guarantee genuine Jewish survival.
We must do justice to the organized efforts to maintain SW
mechanics of living as a Jew in this city day in and day out. ,
Let us be honest and sincere in the firm resolve to work
towards these goals during the New Year 5713 which we are now
entering with the help of the Almighty. May He bless all of vs
and send His peace to Israel and to all mankind.

K'sivoh Va'ehasimoh Tovoh
