I Wish To Be'

Dedicated to the Memory of
RABBI B. BENEDICT GLAZER

His Wisdom of PEACE, heart,
mind and soul,
His Respect for the individual
person,
His Regard for the sacredness of
Human Life,
Upon which his long days were
spent.

•

* *

For him—"PEACE"---was an im-
mortal task,
TRUTH, CHARITY AND TOL
ERANCE was his goal,
Hoping that his high dreams
come true,
For the establishment of LIB-
ERTY AND FREEDOM.

His devotion to humanity and to
ONE GOD,
Impelled by a sense of his pro-
phetic heritage,
His unbroken tradition in this
universal task,
For the abolishment of war and
persecution.
• * *
Life began for me—then—I knew
that day,
He made me think—and study
into the deep,
And every word that I heard him
say, and pray,
Has held the truth, for which
the ages weep.

Tradition and Meaning of `Tashlich'

There is an old custom in many Jewish communities for Jews
to walk to a river on the afternoon of the First Day of Rosh
Hashanah—or on the Second Day if . the First occurs on the Sab-
bath—and to participate in a Tashlich ceremony by reciting these
verses (7.18-20) from Micah:
"Who is a God like unto Thee, that pardoneth iniquity and
passeth by the transgression of the remnant of His heritage?
He retaineth not His anger forever, because He delighteth in
loving kindness. He will again have mercy upon us; He will
subdue our iniquities. And Thou wilt cast all their sins into
the depths of the sea. 0 mayest Thou cast all the sins of Thy
people, the house of Israel, into a place where they shall be
no more remembered or ever again come to mind. Thou wilt
show faithfulness to Jacob, and loving kindness to Abraham,
as Thou hast sworn unto our fathers from the days of old."
The Tashlich tradition is to remind us that as the body is
purified by water, so should our souls be purified by repentance
and God's mercy.
The Tashlich tradition, taken from the second verse in Micah,
above, meaning "Thou shalt cast into the sea," is traced back to
the 13th century. First published . mention of the custom appears
in the writings of the Maharil (Jacob ben Moses Moelln-1355-
1427).
