Austria Asked to Compensate

VIENNA — The Austrian gov-
ernment will be asked to make
a lump-sum payment of $10,000,-
000 as compensation for heirless
Jewish • property seized by the
Nazi regime and will be asked
to pay a further unspecified sum
hi compensation for lost and
damaged property, including
burned synagogues and dese-
crated cemeteries, it was dis-
closed Tuesday.
A newly formed federal body
embracing all Jewish organiza-
tions in Austria, meeting in Salz-
burg, adopted resolutions call-
ing on the Austrian. govern-
ment to pay full compensation
for damages inflicted by the
Nazi regime. For the first time,
Austrian Jews, in raising com-
pensation issues, drew attention
to the responsibility of Austrian
Nazis for the ravaging of the
Austrian Jewish community.
Formerly they had placed sole
blame on the German Nazis.
The West German govern-
ment recently refused, in
agreeing to pay compensation
to the Jews of Germany and
Nazi occupied lands, to include
the Jews of Austria on the
grounds that Austria had not
been occupied by Germany but
had had its own Nazi regime.
The Austrian Jewish corn=
munity is being supported in its
compensation claims by the
World Jewish Congress, the Jew-
ish Agency, the American Jew-
ish Committee and the Joint
Distribution Committee, all of
whom had representatives at the
Salzburg meeting. The coin-

of government or economic sys-
tem which is based on, or main-
tains itself by, the suppression
of the elemental bases of hu-
man liberty—freedom of speech,
of the press, of association, of
religious worship—is, therefore,
abhorrent to them.
"The real reason for the prop-
agation of this falsehood be-
comes apparent in Chancellor
Hitler's words when he refers to
'Marxism and its related parlia-
mentary democracy.' Under the
pretext of an attack on bolshe-
vism, many of whose tyrannical
featUres have been adopted by
. the National Socialists, the Nazi
government has in practice
robbed the German people of
their civil rights, suppressed
freedom of speech, of the press,
and assembly, has destroyed the
free labor unions and confiscat-
ed their funds; and it is now
engaged in a pagan assault upon
the religious conscience of the
Protestant, Catholic, and Jew
alike. It is not plain that his
thunderbolts against Marxism
are only a smoke screen for his
sinister designs upon the liber-
ties of the German people and
the peace of the world?
"Because we have an abiding
faith in the spirit that animates
the true American, we call upon
him not to permit this campaign
of slander and libel to go un-
reproved. We are confident that
our fellow Americans of all
faiths, familiar with the lesson
of history that oppression sets no
limit to its victims, will add
their voices in protest against
the destruction of the innocents
in Germany.
"We are firm in our belief that
the American sense of justice
and fair play will influence our
fellow citizens to express them-
/selves unmistakably against the
ruthless suppression of . liberty
of conscience, against the de-
struction of human lives and
human ideals, and against the
revival of pagan barbarism in
the heart of the civilized world.

munity, which expects to have
close cooperation with all Jew-
ish world organizations, will
seek settlement of all pending
restitution problems. Opening
of talks with the Austrian gov-
ernment is expected soon.

Oil Purchases Authorized
LONDON — Dr. F. Shinnar,
member of the Israeli delegation
at The Hague reparations nego-
tiations, Tuesday handed to the
management of the Shell Oil
Co. of Britain authorization
from the .West German Finance
Ministry to use German sterling
credits for the purchase of oil
from the company.
This is the first payment un-
der the German-Israel repara-
tions agreement signed last week
and the German payment pre-
cedes formal ratification of the
treaty under which Germany
undertook to purchase oil stocks
abroad for shipment as repara-
tions to Israel. While the pact
provided for a firm undertaking
to ship oil for only one year, it
specified that Germany would
continue such purchases for Is-
rael's use if foreign currency
were available in the future. The
first year's shipments will
amount to about as much oil as
Israel normally purchases from
Britain, approximately t w o -
thirds of her annual needs.

Blatant Anti-Semitism

D reef JTA Teletype Wire to

The Jewish News

JOHANNESBURG — A blatant
case of Anti-Semitic discrimi-
nation in employment in this
city was made public Tuesday,
with the publication in the cur-
rent issue of the Zionist Record
of a letter from a local firm
turning down a job applicant on
the assumption that she was
Jewish.
The applicant had been in-
terviewed and verbally accept-
ed for a position with H. W.
Wedderburn, Ltd., a scale manu-
facturing firm, but upon reach-
ing her home found a letter
from the firm stating that "al-
though it was not • disclosed at
the interview, judging by the
references you gave me I assume
that you could be Jewish. If my
assumption is correct, I regret
that I must cancel the arrange-
ments made." Signed by H. W.
Wedderburn, chairman of the
company.
