Stevenson, Ike Seek Understanding
Among All Racial, Religions Groups

In statements made public by
the National Conference of
Christians and Jews, General
Dwight D. Eisenhower and Gov-
ernor Adlai E. Stevenson agreed
on the nation's need for under-
standing and cooperation among
all racial and religious groups.
"Without tolerance, without
understanding of each other or
without a spirit of brotherhood,
we would soon cease to exist as a
great nation," declared General
Eisenhower, calling on every
American to pledge in political
affairs that "no taint of relig-
ious or racial animosity shall
trouble our national unity."
Equally emphatic, Governor
Stevenson urged the removal and
destruction of myths that- gnaw
at our vitals," a d d i n g, "we
can ill afford to exhibit to the
ixrorld either incompetence or
injustices in dealing with the
relations of racial or religious
groups."
The statements from both
presidential candidates of . t h e
two major parties were obtained
by the National Conference of
Christians and Jews which since
its organization in 1928 has con-
ducted a program to promote
better intergroup relations and
respect for the dignities and
rights of all groups of the Am-
erican people.
The statements were released.
by the three NCCJ co-chairmen,
Benson Ford, vice - president,
Ford Motor Co.; Thoznas E.
Braniff, president, Braniff In-
ternational Airways: and Roger

indicated that the National Con-
ference of Christians and Jews
would circulate through its 62
regional offices from coast to
coast the two statements as an
educational effort in strength-
ening public opinion for -f a i r
play in politics.
In issuing the statements, the
co-chairmen also appealed to all
Americans to join in waging a
political campaign that is "fair
and according to the rules."
."All of our political parties
will seek strenuously for victory
at the polls," they said. "How-
ever, there can be no victory un-
less each party conducts a de-
cent campaign, a campaign
based only on issues, a campaign
that firmly rejects any attempt
to win votes through appeals to
racial and religion -s antagon-
isms."
