L ISTENING

THERE'S A WHIRLWIND in
town . . . and if you've ever seen
a whirlwind in action you'll
know the way a certain gent
named Fredy Schey has been
moving around . . . He is the
personal repre s e n t a t i v e of
fashion designer Maurice Rent-
ner . . . and in the short space
of time Fredy has been here to
set up the Bonds for Israel
Fashion Show of Rentner crea-
tions . . . Sept. 17 . . . at the
Masonic Temple . . . he has
gotten more things done than a
busy beaver with an extra set of
teeth . . . Before the gals of the
Women's Division could turn
around, Fredy had already ar-
ranged for everything necessary
to put on a top quality fashion
show . . . When he saw the Scot-
tish Rites Cathedral at Masonic
Temple, he said it looked too
much like a church .. and one,
two, three, he had arranged to
have it look like some other
place! . . . Being an artist, also,
Fredy had new backdrops made
and even came back with two
huge Grecian architectural pil-
lars to lend the right atmos-
phere to the setting that is to
take place . . . Both Schey and
Rentner are Jewish and hold
fond interests in the great Israeli
movement . . . Admission to the
Maurice Rentner Fashion Show
is by purchase of an Israel Bond
. and from the way it looks,
almost 2,000 local women are
going to attend.

THE SISTERHOOD OF Ahavas
Achim on Schaefer Hgwy.,
youngest of the Conservative
synagogues, is going top speed
to put over its first big affair
• . . a cabaret dance, Yom Kip-
pur Night, Sept. 29, at Parkside
Hall . . . Max Sosin will be mas-
ter of ceremonies . . . and when-
ever Max is around, any affair
is sure to be a success! . . . For
tickets, contact Genevieve Click-
er, VE. 5-2571.

THERE'S A REMARKABLE
woman living in South Haven
• . • unsung only because of the
small community whose tiny
population of 4500 consists of
only 125 year-round Jewish fam-
ilies • . . To some folks, Pauline
Cohen is just the head of the
Real Bakery in South Haven . .
but to those who know her, she
is without a doubt "The First
Lady" of all Jewry in that small .
resort town . . . Pauline not only
leads the Sunday School but also
takes over on all religious occa-
sions since there is no rabbi to
continue the work ... She is a sec-
tary of the Zionist Organiza-
tion in South Haven, past pres-
ident of the Bnai Brith chapter
and secretary of the local UJA,
to name but a few of her activi-
ties . which all told would take
an entire column to enumerate!
. • . Clippings from The Detroit
Jewish News and of Judaism in
general are exhibited all over
the store . . • where she has
proudly gained the respect of
every customer • . . race, color
or creed . . in her amazingly
wonderful work toward the
maintenance and betterment of
Jewish education and its deriva-
tives in South Haven ... Pauline
Cohen may be only one person
in a great cause . but what a
gal!

THE POPULAR orchestra team
of Mickey and Sammy Woolf
has split up after so many years
together as a great favorite in
the Jewish community ... Folks
who took them to be brothers
will be surprised to know that
Mickey is a nephew to Sammy
. the latter also being a much
more experienced entertainer,
with continual popularity due to

his fine talents and likeable per-
sonality . . . Mickey and Sammy
first teamed up during the last
war for a LTS0 show here in
Detroit • . and had been to-

gether ever since . • . until their
recent split . . . Sammy will now
direct his own orchestra . . .

ANOTHER GERSHWIN story
crops up in the series we've been
running about insurance than
Ed Wolfe's collection of tales
regarding the great composer
and Oscar Levant . When
George Gershwin died, a man
of sentiment combined with
musical aspirations wrote an
elegy in his, honor . . . He sought
out Levant . .. Reluctantly, the
noted wit, pianist and great
friend of Gershwin granted him
a hearing .. . Eagerly, the man
rendered the piece with his own
hands and then turned toward
Levant, seeking approval .
"I think it would have been bet-
ter," Levant said, "if you had
died and Gershwin had written
the elegy!"
