LZOA Plans Israeli Labor College
In Honor of Its Golden Jubilee

The Labor Zionist Organiza-
tion of America has decided to
build a labo'r college in Jerusa-
lem in honor of the organiza-
tion's golden jubilee to be cele-
brated next year.
Announcement of the new
educational Institution was
made by LZOA president, Dr.
James G. Heller, at a special
conference for Histadrut (Gen-
etal Federation of Jewish Labor
in Israel) 'attended at New
York's Statler Hotel by 100 lead-
ers of the Labor Zionist Organ-
' ization of America representing
various sections of the United
States and Cant.da.
The college would provide
needed facilities for •adult edu-
cation 'in Jerusalem, Dr. Heller
declared, pointing out that the
city's population has greatly in-
creased in the past four years.
"The labor movement itself
has increased nearly 150 per
fent since the state was founded
in 1948, and now numbers L-
500,000 adult workers and their
'wives," Dr. Heller stated.
"Histadrut is the pillar upon
which the State of Israel rests,
and the organized labor move-
ment has provided the pioneer-
ing manpower necessary for the
development of the country. If
Histadrut was needed before the
beginning of an independent
state, it is needed even more now
to assure the character of that
state.
"Histadrut difficulties have in-
creased as it faces many new
problems, and it must have
stronger support from labor and
liberal circles in the United
States and Canada."
In his Detroit address last
week. Dr. Heller stressed that
the Mapai (Israeli labor party)
'stands committed to the de-
fense of the rights of labor, to
the building of the country up-
on the interests of all its people
—but without prejudice against
those of the farmer and the

workingman. It believ'es" in the
cooperative movement which is
more and more the creature of
Histadrut. It is not doctrinnaire
in its approach to private invest-
ment in the land and has fos-
tered measures, passed by the
Knesset which incur the entry
of private capital."
Meanwhile, mobilization of at
least 50,000 volunteers for the
29th annual Histadrut campaign
beginning on Oct. 1 was urged by
Isaac Hamlin, general secretary
of the National Committee for
Labor Israel. The goal is $10,-
000.000. Dr. Herman Seidel of
Baltimore, chairman of the
board of the National Committee
for Labor Israel, pledged full
support to Histadrut during the
year. ,
