Following the success of "I
Long to Belong," a musical com-
edy presented at Knollwood
Count ry Club two years ago,
members have been after its
author. Dr. J. Gilbert Israel, to
write another performance.
Last Saturay night. Knollwood
members witnessed "Mr. Jona-
than." and they all went away
commenting that Dr. Israel had
done it again.
The cast, consisting entirely
of young people, did an excellent
and near-professional job, and
they had wonderful material to
work with. Original music by
Ceor e Jenkins and Stewart
Sanders formed the musical set-
ting for lyrics by Dr. Israel and
Richard B. Werry, a Wayne Uni-
versity professor who collabor-
ated on the script:
There-3Lere 11 songs to bol-
ster Mr. Jonathan, which tells of
the mixup which befalls the
Winthrops and the Bronsons
prior to the surprise engagement
party of their children.
When Mrs. Winthrop, played
by Carol Kottler, makes a phone
call to Mr. Jonathan (Donnie
Sof ferin ), who is to bring the
cake for the party, the conver-
sation is overheard by her
daughter and future son-in-law.
The fun develops when they
misunderstand the conversation,
and have Mrs. Winthrop in-
volved in a rendezvous with Mr.
Jonathan in the attic.
The other principals are Ellen
Sherman as Mrs. Bronson, Mar-
tin Kohlenberg, as Edmund
Bronson, Jerry Halperin as

Front Dr. Israel's Script. 'Mr. Jonathan',

Frank Winthrop, Alan Luckoff as
Harold Bronson and Joan Grey
as Janet Winthrop.
Jerry Kane as Sam and
Marilyn Jasen as Sadie do some
fine cavorting as the servants
hired for the party. Each sings
a song. and they combine talents
on a cute duet called "Life Is a
Joke." Carolyn Israel, as the
maid. is the only other player.
although Halperin and Kohlen-
berg double as a pair of handy-
men to do a humorous bit about
"Arkansas Where We Come
From."
By far the most laugh-pro-
voking number (possibly because
the Knollwood audience felt at-
tuned to the lyrics) was Kohen-
berg's second number called - I
Can't Putt the Ball in the Hole."
Other tunes with excellent lyrics
were Ellen Sherman's plight
about what a woman goes
through to dodge a few extra
pounds. called "Calorie Blues;"
and Carol Kottler's two numbers
"A Doting Mother Knows What's
Best" and ''It's Fun to Be Neu-
rotic."
The romantic. interest is pro-
vided by Luckoff in "Just You"
and by Miss Grey in "Spring-
time," which also serves as the
play's finale.
The young people all showed
surprising talent for their roles.
especially since none of them
have ever lead claims to dra-
matic or singing careers. It was
good wholesome entertainment
and a lot of fun.'
According to Dr. Israel, the
show will go on, too. It will be
made available to charitable or-
ganizations who want to add a
little something extra to their
plans for fund-raising.
Aiding the presentation on the
production staff were Kenneth
Wolstone, Arlene Fineman, Deal
Fischer. Stewart Sanders, Oscar
Grey. Mrs. David Newman, Mrs.
Charles Kottler, Albert F. Run-
ell, Mrs. Harry Modell, Harold H.
Gilbert, Knollwood president,
and Sam Kane.
