ROME, (JTA) — The Jewish
community of Venice has ap-
plied to the Union of Jewish
Comunities in Italy for assist-
ance in restoring three syna-
gogues in this city. which are
treasures of nearby Jewish
communities which no longer
exist.
The Union has advanced 500,-
000 lira toward the funds need-
ed to restore the synagogues,
one of which was built in 1532
and the other two of which were
constructed in 1580. The Joint
Distribution Committee is ex-
pected to contribute some of the
money needed for the restora-
tion.
The Union has revealed that
it is planning to take over res-
ponsibility for the maintenance
of some 300 "hard-core" Jewish
DPs scattered throughbut Italy
