Miriam's Stories for Our Boys . 10 — THE JEWISH NEWS Hello Boys and Girls: An activity that is going on in almost every Jewish com- munity all over the country is the building of new synagogues. You have probably seen one go- ing up -recently—perhaps your family belongs to a congrega- tion which is building a syna- gogue, and you have watched its progress eagerly. The very first impo rt a n t house of worship built by the Jewish people was the famous Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem. Our story this week is a legend of how that structure was made possible. When King Solomon, the wis- est of all men decided to build a Temple dedicated to the glory of God of Israel, he resolved that the altar and all the stone- work should be constructed without using any metal imple- ment, since tools of iron sym- bolize war, while the Temple was to be a symbol of peace. But how could he accomplish this wonderful deed? After much thought, he turn- ed to his ministers for advice. One aged advisor said: "Mighty Friday, July 11, 1952 ~ and Girls KA UFMAN ' SS KOSHER DILL & NEW DILL PICKLES AT YOUR FAVORITE GROCERS OR DELICATESSEN DEALER TR. 5-4379 Bailey Avenue :-: South Haven, Michigan ■ the finest RELAX ■ ■ SWIM PLAY in Ke , licr Food, located on l5 acres of beautiful earl !a: ,1, tennis court, children's pl,y- giounds, recreation room, movies, shuffleboard television, and activities. Haven't you heard of that most wonderful of God's creatures, the Shamir, the tiny diamond insect which can cut stone better than the sharpezt tool of iron?" • "The Shamir is the answer!" agreed the King. "Now tell me, where is this miracle insect to be found?" "Alas." said the counselor. "No living being knows. But you, Sire, are the ruler of all spirits and demons. Seek their aid." Solomon dismissed his minis- ters and, by casting a secret spell, he called before him Ash- modai, King of the Demons. Even Ashmociai did not have the Shamir, but he was able to tell the King how to find it. "Since the days of Moses. who employed the Shamir when writing on the Tablets of Stone, the worm has been entrusted to the care of the Prince of the Sea, who has given it into the charge of the woodcock. The bird lives in a nest built on the top of a very high mountain, and whenever he goes away from from his nest, he carries the Shamir with him, beneath his wing." After expressing his gratitude to Ashmodai, King Solomcm summoned his captain, Benaiali. and sent him to look for the nest of the woodcock. "Take with you," instructed the King. "a glass cover, a little wool, and a small leaden box." After a long journey over hill and dale, stream and desert. Benaiah at last discovered the nest of the woodcock. Only the fledgings were in the nest. Be- naiah laid the glass over them and then hid in the bushes nearby. When the woodcock re- turned, he tried. -to enter his nest, but could not penetrate the glass. He saw his helpless young through the glass and, flapping his wings and screech- ing, he tried to break it. But all his efforts were in vain. As a last resource, he decided to make use of the precious treasure entrusted to his care. He took the Shamir from be- neath his wing and put it on the glass which split to pieces as soon as it was touched by the wonderful worm. At that instant, the captain cried out and frightened the woodcock so that the bird drop- ped the Shamir. It had barely fallen upon the ground when Benaiah seized it and carefully placed it in the wool and then into the small leaden box which he had brought for this purpose. He retraced his steps and fin- ally came to Jerusalem and de- livered safely to King Solomon the wonderful worm. With the help of the Shamir, the wise King built his magnificent Tem- ple. Afterward, the Shamir dis- appeared and to this day no one knows where it is to be found. • Can you imagine how quickly our new synagogues would rise today, boys and girls, if we had the help of such a miracle as the Shamir? But, of course, this story was a legend, something like a fairy tale, which we only wish would come true.
