The Knesset also discussed a bill to establish central control over schools and institutions of higher learning in Israel. The measure, which would provide for a "Council for Institutions of Higher Education," would affect the Hebrew University, Weiz- mann Institute of Science. Haifa Technical Institute and other institut ions which the council may deem fit to include in its I jurisdiction. The Council would be respon- sible for the financial consolida- tion of these schools, would t 1; manage their finances and would he responsible for ex- ipanding their facilities and im- 4 1 proving their academic stand- .- arils. as well as setting tuition fees, registering students, giv- ing examinations, p r e s e n ting degrees, and appoint academic staffs.
