Although he is accustomed to
heat waves in his adopted land
of Israel:- Chaim Lansky viewed
Detroit's weather man with
some apprehension on his ar-
rival here last week. "The heat

• •
• The weather, however, wasn't
nearly as warm as the reception
given him by his two sisters
whom he hadn't seen for over
30 years.
When Mrs. Sidney Fishman
and Mrs. Morris Fishman met
their brother on his arrival it
was the first time they had
seen him since they left David
Horodok, their native city. in
1922.
Lansky, himself, left David
Horodok five years later and
settled in Palestine. The only
dull note in the reunion was
the absence of their parents,
Cantor and Mrs. Shmarya Lan-
sky. w49,were killed by the Na-
zis in 1940.
For 20 of his 25 years in Pales-
tine. Lansky has lived in Haifa.
He is married and the father of
a daughter, 12, and a son, 6. He
is employed as chief accountant
for the flistadrut of Haifa.
Prior to his visit here. he
stopped in New York to greet
two other sisters. There is an-
other brother in Israel. His sis-
ters here are married to the
Fishman brothers, owners of
the Market Basket, who live on
Webb Ave.
Asked how long Israel would
have to receive aid from the
Allied Jewish Campaign, bond
drive and the U. S. Govern-
ment, Lansky estimated it
would take between seven and
10 years before the new state
becomes economically stable—
and that is providing there is
no further immigration.
He said, however. that if aid
is stopped, the people of Israel
"will pull their belts a little
tighter, decrease their standard
of living, but will go on living
and making efforts to build and
strengthen their country." He
added that he can't imagine
American Jewry ever letting Is-

most Israelis) that it is not
only right but expedient for
Israel to obtain payments from
Germany. "Financial repay-
ment," he emphasizes, "can

never make us forget the
moral debt owed to all Jewry."
"While the air is filled with
speculation." said Lansky, "you
can feel assured that the Ger-
mans are just as anxious to
settle the reparations debt as
are the Israelis." He believes
some compromise figure between
the $1,500,000,000 proposed by
Israel and the $750,000,000 of-
fered by Germany will be ac-
cepted as the final settlement.
Lansky expects to remain
here for about a month with his
sisters before returning to his
family in Haifa.

—A resolution approving the ac-
tion of the Israel government
and the Conference on Jewish
Claims Against Germany "re-
garding restitution for Jewish
property confiscated by t h e
Nazis and for which the entire
German people bears responsi-
bility," was adopted at the 65th
national convention of Brith
Abraham, Jewish fraternal
order.
Other resolutions called upon
the democratic and Republican
parties to adopt in their plat-
forms at the coming national
conventions a "civil rights" pro-
gram.
The delegates took a strong
stand against Communism and
other forms of totalitarianism;
called for effective anti-lynch-
ing legislation; opposed the Mc-
Carran-Walter immigration bill
and asked President Truman to
veto it and urged the U.S. to
ratify the United Nations Con-
vention on Genocide.
In a resolution on Israel, the
convention called upon Ameri-
can Jews "to give the fullest
moral and economic support" to
the Jewish state. It criticized
the American Council for Juda-
ism for its opposition to the Is-

rael bond drive.

June 4, in front of Hotel Astor,

ing held in honor of Mayor Abba
Hushi of Haifa. -
The young men and young
women marched in orderly pick-
et lines in front of the hotel,
and distributed circulars, alleg-
ing that Mayor Hushi has been
"misusing his high office to
combat religion and its observ-
ance in Haifa."
Among the slogans carried
aloft by the pickets were such
phrases as "Mayor Hushi: You
can't hush up the Haifa story!"
and "Support the Israeli bond
drive—but don't drive G-d from
Israel." The leaflets were signed
by a group calling itself: "Com-
mittee for Religious Freedom in
Israel," which the demonstra-
tors explained was a voluntary
group of "0 r t h o d o x Minute
