Shown is the architect's rendering of a cabin to be constructed
on the first village of the Tamarack site. Winterized throughout,
it can be used in all seasons. The project is made possible through
a $61,000 appropriation from the 1952 Allied Jewish Campaign.
Taking a major step toward
providing adequate camp facili-
ties to meet the needs of Jew-
ish boys and girls, the board of
governors of the Jewish Welfare
Federation has approved an ap-
propriation of 561,000 for the
construction of a camp village
on the new Tamarack site. pur-
chased with Allied Jewish Cam-
paign funds.
The appropriation was the
first recommendation of the
Federation committee on capi-
tal needs.
Irwin Shaw. executive direc-
tor of Fresh Air Society. spon-
soring group of the camp, said
that it is hoped construction
will be initiated in July.
The $61.000 will construct and
equip the first village of the
Tamarack site, to provide facili-
ties for 42 campers and staff.
The buildings will be used not
only in the summer for boys and
girls, but for week-end vacation
camping during the rest of the
year by young adult and adult
groups.
The village will consist of flye
cabins, each with a capacity of
10 people and one unit lodge
which will include the washroom
facilities. a kitchen, an office, a
heating and storage room, as
well as a large main room serv-
ing as the dining room. recrea-
tion hall and craft shop.

precedented registration of 1,500

this demand with its present fa-
cilities at the Fresh Air Camp.
near Brighton. The new village
will permit three-week camp
vacations for 126 different chil-
dren. By next summer, Shaw
said, "we hope that a second
village will also be available.
since there is every indication
that the registrations will con-
tinue to increase."
The master plan for the de-
velopment of the Tamarack site
calls for the construction of 12
such villages with a total camp-
er population of 500 children.
A unique feature of this plan
is the elimination of the large
central dining hall; instead,
each village will be a self-con-
tained unit with its own dining
hall. However. food for all of
the villages will be prepared at
a central "Food Factory" and
transported in vacuum cans to
the individual villages.
