'United Synagogue of America, in
Boston, last week-end, two De-
troit synagogues were honored
with Solomon Schechter awards
—Shaarey Zedek for its educa-
thinal work and Beth Aaron for

ids received an awards for pro-

Rabbi Morris Adler shared
honors with Israel Ambassador
Abba Eban in addressing the
public convention meeting.
Maxwell Abbell of Chicago.
president of the United Syna-
gogue, declared that only a re-
surgence 'CT-Me spiritual and re-
ligious spirit "could lead the na-
tion and the world out of hot
and cold wars to peace and
amity." Abbell lashed out at the
materialistic leadership of many
congregations. He declared:
"The time has come for a
nobler type of lay leadership to
come to the helm in our congre-
gations. We must emancipate
ourselves from bondage to men
hose only qualificiation is their
wealth but whose character and
way Of life leave much to be de-
sired. In too many instances
men acquired leadership of Jew-
ish communities and causes. and
have dictated the tone and
direction to that Jewish life
which they have forsaken and
which their children will prob-
ably deny and be ashamed of."
Israel Ambassador Abba Eban,
who was one of the principal
speakers, said if Israel fails as
a democracy all the Middle East
will be lost to the Western Pow-
ers.
The family of Mr. and Mrs.
Saul Margolis, of Brookline,

JWV to Skip Parades

on Memorial Day

Units of the Jewish War Vet-
erans will not participate in Me-
modal Day parades this year be-
cause the first day of Shevuot
falls on May 30. announced JWV
National Commander Paul Gins-
berg.
Ginsberg directed the 664 posts
of the Jewish War Veterans to
refrain from Memorial Day pa-
rades because such activities
"would be inconsistent with our
religious obligations.''
In place of the usual JWV
policy of parading with other
veterans' groups. two alternate
procedures have been suggested:
1. Posts are authorized to trans-
mit letters to local parade chair-
men, explaining the nature of
Shevout and asking that the
reason for JWV's absence be
made known to the other veter-
ans' organizations. 2. Posts may
ask that their colors be carried
by units of other veterans or-
ganizations in the parades.
