Zeitlin Scoops Scholarly Worts
With Photos of `Zadokite Fragments'

PHILADELPHIA, (AJP) — The
controversial "Zadokite Frag-
ments", held for more than half
a century in the Solomon
Schechter collection at the Uni-
versity of Cambridge, England,
have been published.in facsimile
by Prof. Solomon Zeitlin, of
Dropsie College. Photographic
reproduction of these manu-
script remains of an ancient
Jewish sect was forbidden by Dr.
Solomon Schechter during his
lifetime and that of his heirs.
Dr. Schechter, who was presi-
dent of the Jewish Theological
Seminary of America, discovered
the Fragments, along with other
manuscript treasures in 1897 in
the Geniza of the old synagogue
in Cairo, Egypt. He published
the text with an English trans-
lation in 1910. The "Zadokite
Sect," which flourished near
Damascus about the beginning
of the Christian era, was un-
known up • to then, and the

manuscripts described its origi
peculiar halaka and messiani
expectations. Some Biblica
scholars disputed Dr. S 'hechter
version of the text, and a highl
sensational controversy follow
its publication.
