In Honor of Mot
A lifetime of scholarship and
research is incorporated in Dr.
A. M. Hershman's new book,
"Israel's Fate and Faith," pub-
lished last week by Congregation
Shaarey Zedek in honor of its
senior rabbi's recent 70th birth-
day. This imposing work, which
contains the sermons, special ar-
ticles and addresses which Rabbi
Hershman considers his most
impqrtant utterances, will serve
as a guide for younger men in
the rabbinate and for commun-
ity leaders who seek. inspiration
in Jewish learning.
The opinions of Dr. Hersh-
man of 45 years ago and those
of the intervening years are
as valuable today as they were
when first expressed. His ap-
peals for the Zionist cause are
even more significant today
peals for Zionism and Jewish ed-
ucation are certain to leave a
deep impression.
His addresses at conventions
of the Zionist Organization of
America and the United Syna-
gogue of America lend new
meaning to the ideals of both
movements. Included in his . col-
lection of addresses, sermons
and special articles is his sermon
on the third anniversary of
that the Jewish people has not Israel's independence, his letter

Rabbi Hershman for having dis-
covered "new truths in the an-
cient, perennial dicta of the
Torah."-
Dr. Hershman's sermons urge
self-reverence and self-knowl-
edge. He admonishes Jews that
the Torah is "the instrument
whereby the world was

ist, a letter to the Free Press
defending the Zionist cause, an
article on the Sabbath reprinted

because they are as applicable

Jewish state.
There are 84 separate articles
in this book. in addition to the
prefatory notes and the fore-
word. Six Passover sermons open
the volume and are follow,ed by
four on Shabuot. eight on Rosh
Hashanah. four on Yom Kippur,
seven on Sukkot, three on Ha-
nukah, 26 Sabbath sermons,
three on the synagogue, two con-
secration addresses, two speech-
es on Jewish education, six ut-
terances on Zionism and 13 mis-
cellaneous addresses.
In every instance, Dr.
Hershman's views are ex-
pressed in masterful style. In
its totality it is a flawless Work
—insofar as any book can be
called flawless. When the
reader is through with a chap-
ter, he has learned something.
Men of research will find that
the eminent rabbi has devoted
a great deal of study to all
his subjects.. It is the work of
the Master who did not speak
unless he was certain of the
facts.
In a prefatory note, Rabbi
Morris Adler, Dr. Hershman's
associate in the Shaarey Zedek
pulpit, and Charles Rubiner, the
congregation's president, express
the hope that "the sound teach-
ing which Dr. Hershman's ser-
mons embody may turn many
hearts to God, Torah and Israel."
They wish the illustrious leader
health and strength and pay
him this tribute:
"For almost four and a half
decades Dr. Hershman has
served our Congregation and
the community of which it is
part. His scholarship a n d
leadership have brought re-
nown and eminence to the
Synagogue and have won a
deeper respect for its ideals
and traditions. Several gen-
erations have been privileged
to receive instruction and
guidance. from Dr. Hershman.
They have been elevated and
guided by the lofty thoughts
and principles which he has
consistently enunciated. The
Congregation rejoices that in
publishing Dr. Hers hman's
sermons, it is making them
available to a larger audience.
They will enrich the literature
of which they now become
part."
