about their visit as he was. Mrs.
Allen and Mrs. Shapero said
they were thrilled to have had

complishments of Hadassah in
whose ranks they have been ac-
tive for years.
In an extemporaneous report
on his experiences, before 150
Allied Jewish Campaign lead-

mendous accomplishments in Is-
rael: and of the advances that
have been made by industrial
enterprises.
He gave an interesting report
on the creative efforts of the
pioneers who are conquering the
Negev and spoke with admira-
tion of the progressive attain-
ments by Palma Pharmaceutical
Co. and other manufacturing
plants whose products are on a
par with the best in the world.

"It will take many years to

the tradition of free exchange
of thought a n d opinion in
American colleges, the National
Council of Jewish Women will
sponsor a $5,000 nationwide con-
test among students for the best
essays on "The Meaning of Aca-
demic Freedom," announced
Mrs. Irving M. Engel, president.
The contest will be open to
all seniors (class of 1953 ► , both
men and women, in colleges and
universities throughout the
United States.
Cash awards are: First prize,
$2,500; second. $1,000; and third,
fourth and fifth. $500 each.
Mrs. Engel explained that the
essay contest is a development
of t h e "Freedom Campaign"
which was launched by the Na-
tional Council of Jewish Women
to help create a climate more
conducive to the free exchange
of ideas by urging on all Ameri-
cans the fuller exercise of their
right of tree speech. The slo-
gan of the Freedom Campaign
is "Speak Up! Freedom Needs
Exercise."
The contest will accept en-
tries beginning Sept. 15, and will
close Dec. 31. Winners will be
announced about the middle of
April, 1953. Maximum length of
essays is 2,500 words. Detailed
rules and instructions will be is-
!sued to all colleges before the
opening of the" fall term.
