a little butterfly like you
couldn't possibly make the

the butterfly, "but you know
how it is. That was my girl
friend and I was trying to
impress her."
"Well," said the King, "I'll
let you go this time, but don't
do it again."
So the_huaterfly returned to
its mate who asked him what
the King had said about his
claim that he could make the
temple wall r.11 down.
"The King said, 'don't do
it.'" said the butterfly.
King Solomon could under-
stand the language of a butter-
fly. so it seems not unthinkable
that he was ,just the type who
could understand the secret
language of Masons—the lan-
guage which they convey by
such routine methods as the
handshake and so on.
The Scotch Rite Masons go so
far as to use the Hebrew
months of the y ear in their of-
ficial announcements. The gen-
eral argot of Masonry is largely
composed of words and terms
from the Old Testament and
these terms have not been
translated. but taken over
bodily.
TI,a Hebrew terms were taken
over because they connoted the
incomprehensible and the mys-
tic- By the use of them, the
Masons are transported into a
kind of Shangri La where the
- imagination has more play.
Masonry stood for fraternity -,
for brotherhood, but abstract
principles and ideals, however
noble and perhaps because they
are noble. require some sauce
of mysticism and ceremony.
The Masonic Order has al-
ways exerted a great attrac-
tion for the Jew and it is
hardly denied that in former
days, at least, it was a great 1
force in breaking down the
prejudices against the Jews
raised by sectarian bigotry. ,
Perhaps the best tribute to its •
effectiveness is the fact that
the Masonic Order has fre-
quently been attacked by
anti-Semites as a Jewish-
sponsored order.
Perhaps the finest tribute to
be paid Masonry is the list of
names of those who have sought
to destroy it. The great leader
of Nazi anti-Semitism, Von Lu-
dendorf. for instance. was a bit-
ter foe of Masonry. It is inter-
esting to note that the German
Masonic lodges alone, at least
for a time, refused to admit
Jews as members.
The anti-Semites have always
exaggerated the influence of the
Jews in the Masonic order, but
Jews have now and again 'teen
honored in the order. Back in
