Israel's hundreds of thousands
of new immigrants have been
helped by American Jewry's sup
port of the United Jewish Appeal
"to Win freedom from fear add
oppression" but they are still a
long way from "winning' eco-
nomic independence," Ezra E.
Haddad, leader of Israel's Jew-
ish immigrants from Iraq and
director of Mapai'S Department
for Eastern Jews, declared at a
conference after arriving in this
country from Jerusalem to take
part in the UJA's current na-
tionwide campaign;
Haddad told newsmen in New
York that "Israel is a land of al-
most unlimited Opportunity for
its new immigrants" but that
"without the help of American
Jews these opportunities can
neither be grasped nor realized."
The leader of the 120.000 Iraqi
Jews whose "deadline" move-
ment to Israel last year was
made possible with funds raised
through the UJA, stressed that
"housing is the number one
road-block."
"Once an immigrant gets a
house." he declared. - he feels
that 80 per cent of his problem
has been solved."
Haddad pointed out, however,
that more than 250.000 of Israel's
700.000 recent Immigrants are
still living in sub-standard shel-
ters. tens of thousands of them
quartered in tents, huts and bar-
racks.
He emphasized that the United
Jewish Appeal has "correctly put
its finger on this issue in asking
American Jews to turn the great
homecoming of the homeless in-
to a great home making. - add-
ing that "without real homes
there can be no real beginning
for those who have come to
start lives anew." .

No Threat in Israel

In a report from Jerusalem by
R. L. Lindsey. secretary of the

Anti-Semitic Tocticc

WASHINGTON. 4JTA)

Vio-

anti-Semitic material was
distributed by supporters of a
"draft MacArthur': campaign
seeking to obtain the Republican
presidential nomination for Gen.
of the Army. Douglas MacArthur.
Members of the Republican
National Committee here re-
ceived the material which was
prepared by F. C. Sammons, di-
rector of the West Virginia Anti-
Communist League. The material
said that the Democratic party
was controlled by Jews and that
"it is very true that the Zionists,
through a controlled press, are
'hell bent' on naming the candi-
dates in the Republican party.
Also, that this must be avoided
by every means, since the Zion-
political
ists, well - organized
group with a world-wide marxist
program, have succeeded in
placing their representatives in
key positions throughout the
government structure."
He said that the **appointees
