Cuii 'nil Women Honor Anniversary
Of Resale Shop with Pick-Up Day

Maimonides Guests
Have Fashion Preview

Members and guests of the
Women's Auxiliary of the Maim-
onides Medical Society were given
a preview of spring at),d summer
fashions at the organization's
seventh annual fund-raising
event. h e 1 d Tuesday, at the
Sheraton Cadillac Hotel.
Following a luncheon for over
600 women, the fashion show
was presented by Sak's Fifth
Avenue, with Shirley Haynes as
commentator. Jack Qualey's
strolling musicians entertained.
A feature of the afternoon were
hat designs created by Mrs.
Emory Kovack, which were used
as centerpieces.
Following greetings by the
president, Mrs. Hyman S. Mellen,
short talks were given by Mrs.
I. Walter Silver, general fund-
raising chairman, and Mrs.
Charles Gitlin, program chair-
man. Mrs. Joseph Markel, ac-
companied by Mrs. Leonard
Kurtz, led in the singing of the
National, Anthem. Mrs. Henry
Small delivered the invocation.
Publicity chairman was Mrs. Max
Steiner.
Organized in 1918 by the late
Mrs. Noah Aronstam, the Maim-
onides Auxiliary has grown
through the years to a member-
ship of over 200 women. The
group has played a prominent
role in drives such as the Torch
Fund, Red Cross and Allied Jew-
ish Campaign.
Proceeds from Tuesday's fund-
raising event will be used for
scholarships for two Israeli stu-
dents at the Hebrew University
medical school and for a scholar-
ship-loan fund for needy medical
students in Detroit. Additional
funds will be sent to Kupat
Holim hospitals in Israel for the
purchase of artificial limbs for
veterans of the Arab-Israel war.

Reminding members of the

resale shop plea, "Wear It, Don't
Spare It, Then Share It,' com-
mittee members have been busy
distributing calico bags to be
filled. These will be collected on
Sunday by the women. assisted
by Boy Scouts from two troops
in the city.
Members who are not con-
tacted Sunday will bring bun-
dles to the- April meeting or will
call one of the resale shops.
Three collection points will be
utilized: the Woodward Jewish
Center, the Resale Shop at 20550
Cherrylawn; and a vacant store
at 7304 McNichols Rd.
When the first resale shop
was opened 18 years ago, it oc-
cupied just one room in the
Council Clubhouse at 89 Rowena
St., now known as Mack Ave. To-
day there is a downtown resale
shop at 2606 Clifford, and a
branch at 20550 Cherrylawn,
which is now one year old.
In 1934, the shop was manned
completely by volunteers, sell-
ing merchandise which was en-
tirely contributed by the mem-
bership. Today the operation
has becorrie so much more ex-
tensive that a full-time worker
is employed in each shop in ad-
dition to the volunteers who still
collect the merchandise.
Proceeds Of the shop enable
Council to carry on its program
of service and education in the
community, as well as to sup-
port 'national projects such as
aid to the Hebrew University in
Israel.
