Expose of State Department
Official's Disruptive Work

By M I LTON, :. FR I EDMAN

WASHINGTON—The State Department soon may be
forced to take action in the case of Edwin M. Wright. In-
belligence Adviser to the department's Ndar Eastern Di-
vision, who makes the mistake of getting his private views
en Israel into the public press. Wright's opinions on the
Jewish state, as expressed from numerous platforms. do
not coincide with official American policy toward Israel.
He not only Indicates an attitude distinctly different from
that of President Truman but his ideas apparently do not
very closely resemble those of the department of the gov-
ernment by which he is employed.
Many letters of protest were received by the State
Department when the press reported anti-Israel remarks
by Wright from variousof the country. The depart-
ment said he was "not !raking officially." Wright said
he was "misquoted." In November, 1950, Wright told an
audience at the IT. S. Naval Academy at Annapolis that
Lsraelis murdered Arabs. He made similar remarks be-
fore.. the Army War College in Washington in 1951. A
gifted speaker, he was invited to the University of In-
diana. the University of Maryland, the YWCA of the
District of Columbiaet and other institutions where thou-
sands got the "unofficial facts" on Israel.
Finally, on Feb. 28. 1952. Wright stood on the plat-
form of the auditorium of the State Department. at 21st
St. at Virginia Ave. This time he had the official assign-
ment of his superiors in the department to brief a group
A American editors who were preparing to leave for a
visit to Israel and elsewhere. This time he spoke inside the
very building of the State Department as an ()facial rep-
resentative of the United States government.
According to the United Press, "he said that the U. S.
had to give financial aid to Israel when the United Jew-
ish Appeal fell short in its quest for funds but, he con-
tended, as long as American aid is forthcothing, Israel
does not feel the need to compromise with its Arab
neighbors."
Speaking to the - editors as a government representative
charged with giving them - an objective briefing on condi-
tions in Israel, -Wright indicated that he wondered wby
they wanted to go to Israel at all. Why go to Israel which
gets all the publicity? Why not go to the Arab states and
see the Arab refugees? This was the line he followed.
He said the case of the Arab states is not adequately
ynderstood in this country because the American press has
=tended to play up the Israel side. He asserted that no pic-
tures of Arab refugees were printed in this country until
six months ago when some appeared in a large national
magazine ("Life").
The editors, who knew that Wright was an official of
the Near Eastern Division of the State Department, went
to Israel with Wright's orientation in the back of their
minds. Hadn't they heard the "facts" from the Near East-
ern "intelligence adviser" in Washington?
If a representative of the Israel Foreign Ministry
made comparable statements to Israel editors bound for
the United States, the American Embassy at Tel Aviv
might raise some questions. It therefore is not unthink-
able that the Israel Embassy in Washington might dis-
cuss the Wright matter with the State Department.
Wright formerly served as liaison man between the de-
partment and the United Nations. More • recently he was
listed as "special adviser to the chief of the Division of
Near Eastern and American. Affairs" and as "Intelligence
Adviser."
Officials in the Near Eastern section of the department
are concerned over the one-man "information" program
being carried on by Wright at this late date when relations
between America and Israel are growing ever closer.

WASHINGTON, (JTA) — Rep. John Rankin, long known for his anti-
Jewish outbursts, made a vicious attack on Jews in the House declaring that
"the same element of Yiddish Communists has control in Russia, in Czechoslo-
vakia, and in every other Communist country in Europe." He spoke in connec- ,
tion with the investigation of the Katyn massacre of Polish officers.
Rep. Ray J. Madden, of Indiana, chairman of the subcommittee
which is conducting the investigation, agreed with the anti-Semitic view
of the Mississippi Congressman. "The gentleman is absolutely correct,"
he said. Chairman Madden made this observation after Rankin finished
an anti-Semitic statement which included the expressed hope that Con-
gress "will not only investigate all the angles of these atrocious Katyn
outrages but that you will investigate the so-called Nuremberg trials."
Rankin said: "Some months ago the Michigan delegation invited me
down to hear a very distinguished man who, I believe, is now president of GI
great military academy in the United States. He had just come back from
Poland. His statement was to the effect that the people of Poland were re-
duced to slavery of the most beastly character, and that a little gang of Yids

at the top was in complete control."
The discussion in which Madden and Rankin participated concerned
the killing of Polish officers during World War II in the vicinity of Katyn,
Poland. Rankin, Madden, and other members. of Congress have urged action
on requests that an investigation be held to fix the blame for the massacre.
anti-
Rankin, among others, asked that the Germans be exonerated .for the
Polish atrocity and that the Soviets be held responsible.
Rep. Francis Walter last week-end attacked the American Jewish
Congress for its opposition to his Omnibus Immigration Bill. The chair-
man of the House Immigration Subcommittee said that there was not a
"scintilla of truth" in A.J.C. charges that his bill would "tear down prec-
ious rights of American citizens." He asserted that the charges were

stated, came
The only statements of opposition to the measure, he
from Dr. I srael Goldstein, president of the A.J.C., and an attorney represent-
ing "refugee interests." He linked the American Jewish Congress opposition
to his plan with that of a Communist publication. (Opposition to the bill has
been announced by all major American Jewish organizations.)
