Yeshivah BuIsinessmen Seek to Provide
Traditional Learning for Jewish Youth
By FRANK SIMONS
Back in May of 1951, an in-
spiration came to Daniel Laven.
As chairman of the Beth Yehu-
dah Schools executive board, he
came to know that many Jew-
ish parents in the city wanted
their children to have a religious
background—if only there were
more, adequate facilities at
schools like the Yeshivath Beth
Yehudah.
He set to work, contacting a
number of local businessman,
who included Abe Green, Harry
Sosnick, Sam Solomon, Louis H.
Golden, David Goldberg and
Benjamin Freedland.
This group formed the basis
of the Businessmen's Council
of the Beth Yehudah Schools, -
which today numbers 25 in-
dividuals sincerely interested
in the progress of Jewish edu-
cation. Laven was appointed.
chairman of the body.
What is probably most inter-
esting about the Council is that
the majority of the members do
not practice what is considered
to be Orthodox Judaism. How-
ever, all of the men come from
a new building with
adequate and fully expanded
facilities for instruction in tra-
ditional religion. This is one of
the reasons for the Council's
dinner and show to be presented
April 20, at the Latin Quarter.
In addition to the appearance
of Ted Weems and his orches-
tra, L in d Brothers and othe.r
acts, the Council is negotiating
for a surprise guest star.
Another purpose for the din-
ner will be to interest some of
those attending to join the
Council; whose immediate mem-
bership goal is '75. Speeches will
not be allowed at the dinner.
