Jewish Agency, Appealslo
ROMatlia to Halt Arrests

Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News

JERUSALEM An appeal by the Jewish Agency Exe-
cutive to the Romanian government to halt-the arrest of
Zionist leaders in Romania was voiced here Monday night
by Dr. Nahum Goldmann, co-chairman of the Agency
Executive.
Speaking at the' current plenary session of the Execu-
tive, Dr. Goldmann said that the meeting had "heard with
anxiety about the wave of arrests of Jews in Romania be-
cause of their Zionism. World Zionism, while appreciating
the Romanian government's postitive attitude toward Is-
rael and the continuation of Jewish immigration f r o in
Romania, cannot comprehend the punishment of those who
are faithful' to the Zionist ideal." He called for the release
of Zionists now under arrest and their migration to Israel

Warning that American
Jews can largely decide the
outcorrle. of Israel's struggle
for economic independence
and that the next four
months loom as the most
crucial period in "this des-
perate fight for survival, -
Edward M. M. Warburg.
general chairman of the
United Jewish Appeal, this

week called upon Jewish
communities throughout
the country to make avail-

able to UJA no later than
June 30 a minimum of
460,000,000 in cash "to help
the Jewish State to make a
gigantic surge forward on
the road to economic free-
dom."
Warburg emphasized that
failure by American Jews
to support these programs
and activities. all waiting
to be financed through the
United Jewish Appeal,
force Israel to divert pre-
cious dollar balances from
other vital programs.
Warburg projected this
picture of American Jew-
ry's responsibility against
a panorama of need and
sacrifice, pointing out that
food and clothing rations
are today more restricted
than ever before and that
austerity is the rule for all
regardless of whether they
live in a house or a tent.
