WOODWARD•N. of 11 1/2 Mile On the Record By NATHAN ZIPRIN (Copyright 1952, Seven Arts Feature Syndicate) Unethical Ad Solicitations The unethical advertising practices of certain national Jew- sh publications may soon come under investigation by the Post ffice authorities . . . Representatives of the publications who have been taken to task for their sharp practices have promised to abandon the unethical and unlawful solicitation methods .. . But most of them have not kept their promise . Their devise was to conduct advertising schemes involving the clipping of ads from established English-Jewish newspapers . . . This matter has been brought to the attention of the NCRAC which has made every possible effort to bring a cessation to the practice before the matter is brought to the attention of the proper authorities, locally or on a national level . . The NCRAC has held a number of conferences with the publishers and editors of the papers accused of engaging in unethical dealings . . . To pre- vent a hillul hashem the NCRAC showed more patience than the matter really warranted .. . It is still hoping for voluntary co- operation from those sources ... But it is doubtful it will be forth- coming . . . Within the last few weeks, in fact I received a num- ber of complaints from newspapers using this column that they had been victims of the swindle . . . The Better Business Bureau has been advised of those practices and there is reason to believe that vigorous action will be taken against the transgressors . . . Too many businessmen have been duped by the scheme for the practice to remain unchallenged . . . I understand that a sub- committee of the NCRAC was scheduled to meet on Feb. 20 with a number of representatives of the publications involved, par- ticularly with one publisher who showed impudent recalcitrance ... If that gentleman persists in his stubborness he may expect a public flaying .. . That particular paper seems to have no cir- culation at all, using its advertising volume as a circulation index . . . A number of Better Business Bureaus throughout the coun- ry have mentioned the unethical practices of those publications in their solicitation letters . . . The NCRAC, I learn, has taken the position that the Better Business Bureau must not be stopped from taking whatever action is warranted by the facts . . • If condemnation of the practice does not deter the violators, they may have to face the music, but with another baton as the director. Editor's Note: Mr. Ziprin's "revelations" are not new. Action against the offending national periodicals had been started, through NCRAC, by the American Association of English-Jewish Newspapers. Merchants in Detroit and other communities again are warned not only to ignore requests, through unauthorized billings, for advertising, but to refer the letters they receive to The Jewish News, the Better Business Bureau or the NCRAC. Action will be taken promptly against the offenders. 12021 Dexter Leo F. Witham, UN. 4-0104 OAK PARK'S FINEST EXPERT wail washing, one day service, guaranteed. Jack Greenberg, TO. 8-2613.
