Knesset OKs Ben-Gurion's
Change in Economic Policy
JERUSALEM, (JTA)—The new
economic policy of the Israel
government was approved in
parliament by a vote of 55 to 44.
A motion expressing non-confi-
dence in the government was re-
jected by a vote of 59 to 44.
Winding up. a 10-hour de-
bate, Premier David -Ben-Guri-
on vigorously denied the alle-
gation that Isriel was nearer
. to e onomic independence
three years ago than it is to-
day.
-
"With the full knowledge of all
difficulties facing us, I declare
that we have made considerable
progress from the time the state
was established and that we are
richer now than at any time
since the establishment of the
state," he said.
Analyzing the causes of the
economic crisis, Ben-Gurion
stated that "penniless immigra-
tion" does not go hanc.-in-hand
with capital. "The Jews of Ye -
men, Iraq, and other countries
did not emigrate because of
idealistic motives but were com-
pelled by a whip which does not
exist where Jewish capital is
concentrated," the Premier de-
clared.
"Whoever maintains that there
is a mutual adjustment between
the immigration of people and
the immigration of capital talks
nonsense," he added.
(The facts behind the govern-
ment's new economic policy will
be presented to American Jewry
at a special conference of Jew-
ish leaders which will take place
in Washington March 1 and 2, it
was announced by the Israel
Embassy. The conference was
called by Ambas9.dor Abba Eb-
an, the announcement said. Mrs.
Golda Meyerson, Israel Minister
of Labor, proceeded to the Unit-
ed States on Sunday and will be
one of the principal speakers as
this conference).
JWB Project to Provide
Photos of Overseas GIs .
NEW YORK—A new and dra-
matic service to American GIs
overseas by which Jewish mili-
tary chaplains overseas will be
enabled to take photographs of
servicemen and furnish the pic-
ture on the spot immediately
after taking was announced by
the Jewish Welfare Board which
is making 24 self-developing
cameras (Polaroid-Land) avail-
able on request to the chaplains.
When Did February Last
Have Five Fridays?
.A check with the perpetual calendar indicates that the last
year in which there were five Fridays prior to 1952 • was--
in 1924—an event which won't happen again until 1980.
Take our proposal, and use this extra day to order a sub-
scription to The Jewish News. Only $4 a year, and a real
investment for the other 51 Fridays. Call WOodward 5-1155
or send in the handy coupon below.
