WORKMEN'S CIRCLE mem-
bers are proud of the television
debut of one of their number
. Kay Peven . . . Kay, the wife
of Dr. Phil Peven, has enter-
tained Workmen's Circle gather-
ings for several years with bal-
lads and folk songs . . Now,
under the name of Kay Britten,
she is heard and seen twice a
week on WWJ-TV.

SQUARE DANCING seems to
have caught on as a growing
fad among the young adults of
the Jewish community . . . al-
most as much as did the rhumba,
a couple of years ago . Organi-
zations are planning and sched-
uling barn dances as a first
resort to gain attendance . .
even though such affairs are
older than grandpappy's corn-
likker feuds with the revenoors
... Young People's Club of Tem-
ple Beth El plans their Square
Dance, March 2, 2:30 p.m. . . .
with Sy Zimmerman doing the
calling . . . Sharona Chapter of
the Pioneer Women give their
Barn Dance, March 16, at Pap-
py's Square Dance Center, 843
E. 8 Mile Rd.

THE GIRLS SWIMMING team
of the Jewish Community Cen=
ter walked away with seven of
eight events while defeating the
Woman's Club junior squad, 37
to 29, in a dual meet . . . It was
so decisive a win- for the Center
gals that they emerged with
three double winners . . . Minna
Weisenseld captured the 25 and
50 yard free-style . . . Sarah
Kolin took the 25 and 50 yard
backstroke . . . and Lenore Weiss
won the 25 and 50 yard breast-
stroke.

WALTER KLEIN, whose brood
consists of three daughters,
claims to be perpetually baffled
by the female mind . . . Last
week, he overheard his daugh-
ters, Miriam and Hannah, six
and four, exchange confidences
about • marriage . . . He reports
that Miriam was saying to her
younger sister, "You know, when
mommy and daddy got married,
mommy got the ring FREE."

DETERMINED TO CROSS the
Mojave Desert in comfort during
their recent trip to California,
Mr. and Mrs. Oscar B. Rubin in-
stalled an air-conditioning unit
in their car and fitted a 50
pound piece of ice and a block
of dry ice in the car ... Never-
theless, they practically "burn-
ed-up" all along the way
At Phoenix, they had their auto
checked . . . and found they had
been driving with their heater

on!

WE DIDN'T WANT to believe it

at first, but the Jewish Com-
munity Council assured us that
there is such an organization
within our community . , . in
existence for several years . . .
with the striking name of Tha-
natopsiS and Inside Straight
Society • . . This group consists
of persons of a philosophical
turn of mind who originally met
to discuss common intellectual
interests ... under the name of
Thanatopsis Society .. . and
eventually discovered that
among other joint interests they
shared an addiction to five and
ten cent poker . . . Ultimately,
they facetiously added Inside
Straight to the name of their
group, and the new appellation
stuck.

SEYMOUR HERTZ casually
strolled into Barton's Chocolates
on. Griswold, bought a two-pound
box of candy for Mit wife, Ruth,

wife . . . However, the matter !
was cleared when Seymour,
sworn to secrecy; had to admit
that the large box was for his
partner's girl friend . . . Jeweler
Jack Stone wanted "the biggest
box in the store" as a surprise,
but didn't reckon with Seymour's
"almost" troubles in buying gifts
for Valentine's Day.

A LOT OF FOLKS may not
realize it, but this country is
definitely at war! ... The boys
in Korea need our help . . .
and need it bad . .. The pint
of blood you give may save the
life of some kid out there
fighting for us . . . So remem-
ber the date • . MARCH 11 .
for the big Bnai Brith Blood
Rally at Cong. Adas Shalom.
