Noah, the father of the famous
Major Mordecai Manual Noah,
was of Sephardic origin, there
may have been other ceremonies.
The Sephardim make a lot of
whoopee at the choopeh. They do
a great deal of dancing, and
among the Sephardim of the
Arab lands, there is a keen com-
petition of an interesting sort
immediately after the pro-
nouncement of the marriage.
The bride and bridegroom
each try to put their foot on
top of the others. Whoever puts
his foot on top first, according
to the legend, will be the boss
in the household through life.
Probably the vogue of this prac-
tice did not extend to the Span-
ish country from which Noah
derived.
Washington ate the latkes and
fish and must have had an in-
teresting evening at the shoh-
etl's home. To be sure, at this
time, Phillips had abandoned
the calling of shochet and be-
come a business man. He ad-
vertised dry goods and groceries
for sale and offered to take
beaver and raccoon .skins in re-
turn. He seems to have done
quite a bit of business with the
Indians.
Phillips, besides being a. very
warm Jew, was a very hot pa-
triot. He was the leader of the
movement to close the Spanish
and Portuguese synagogue when
the British entered New York.
There was a faction which
wanted to continue the services
even during the British occupa-
tion, but, that would have meant
some obeisance to the British
authorities, and Phillips would
close the synagogue altogether
rather than be unfaithful to
General Washington.
And he had his way. The
synagogue was locked up and
most zlf the Jews flea to Phila.-.
delphia. Phillips went to
Philadelphia, t o o, helped
found the first Jewish congre-
gation in Philadelphia. and
joined the army.
So you can see why Washing-
ton esteemed him so, and why
Washington was one of those
who. signed, as a witness, the
Kethuba, the official Hebrew
marriage document of Zipporah
Phillips and Manuel Noah.
There is another reason why
Washington must have had a
great deal of respect for Phil-
lips. He had 21 children. Ben-
jamin Franklin used to boast
that his father had 13 children,
but in Franklin's case, they were
not all of one mother. But Phil-
lips produced his 21 children by
one wife, who lived till 1833.

U. S4 Will Extend
More Israel Aid
WASHINGTON, (JTA)-Israel.
Ambassador Abba Eban, follow-
ing a conference with Acting
Secretary of State James E.
Webb, told newsmen that he wax
"hopeful" that the United States
would extend Israel additional
economic aid. •
The Ambassador declined to
discuss with reporters the exact
amount of assistance expected.
Administration officials indicat-
ed that Israel would receive
about the same amount, approx-
imately $65,000,000, which war
appropriated to the Jewish State
in the Mutual Security Act. of
1951.
The U. S. and Jordan signed a
pact providing for $2,780,000 in
assistance from this country.
Israel "looks with apprehen-
sion at the speed with which
Germany is being brought back
into the family of nations," Am-
bassador Eban said in a nation-
wide broadcast over the Mutual
Broadcasting System.
"Israel and its 500,000 refu-
gees," Mr. Eban said, "find it
hard to believe that this gen-
eration of Gerfnans-which car-
ried out unspeakable crimes and.
murdered in cold blood 6,000,000
men, women and children-can
be a fitting partner to be associ-
ated with the defense of moral
and. liberal values."
The Ambassador referred to
the problem of the Arab refu-
gees, mentioning a recent UN
General Assembly decision to
appropriate $250,000,000 for their
resettlement and employment
"in the countries in which they
now find themselves." He said
that the world will begin to see
a solution to the Arab refugee
problem in three years "if the
Arab . governments cooperate"
with the UN plan.
Sharett Represents Israel
At Funeral of King George
LONDON, (JTA)-Israeli
For-
Minister Moshe Sharett,
flanked by the mission chiefs of
Syria, Lebanon and Yemen ;
marched in the funeral proces-
sion of King George VI through
three miles of London streets as
the late monarch's body war
borne on its last journey to ite
resting place in Windsor.
A day previously, Mr. Sharett,
accompanied by Eliahu Elath,
Israel Minister to the Court of
St. James, was received by
eign
Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham
Palace with the heads of other
special missions.
Mr. Sharett expressed pro-
found sympathy to the Queen
over her loss and sincere good
wishes in the name of the Pres-
ident and the people of Israel.
A wreath of white gladioli and
irises, flown from Israel and
bearing President Chaim Weiz-
mann's card, was among the
floral tributes from heads of
foreign states displayed on the
steps of St. George's Chapel, at
Windsor, where the funeral
services were held.
