The AJC resolution states.

Jewish investigator who urged elimination of duplication of effort
in the Jewish civic protective field.)

Jewish Scouts
Number 75,000

NEW YORK, (AJP)—Boasting
more Jewish youth members
than any other single group in
the • U.S., the Boy Scouts of
America's teen-age Jewish mem-
gerShip now exceeds 75,000, - a
high scout official estimated, as
200 synagogues a n d temples
throughout the nation ushered in
Boy Scout Week with special
prayers at Sabath services.
The estimate of 75.000 Jewish
scouts and the existence of "at
least 1,000 Jewish - sponsored
troops" in the U.S. was coupled
with a disclosure to the Ameri-
can Jewish Press that for the
first time in scouting history,
two Israeli youth leaders had
been granted scholarships to
come here next Spring and view
methods of U. S. scouts.
The two Israeli scouts, will
visit America under the auspices
of the U.S. movement's World
Friendship Project, a service
which each year bears the ex-
pense of inviting foreign scout
leaders to the U.S. for an ex-
change of ideas and approaches
to scouting.
Dr. Harry Lasker, national di-
rector of Jewish relations for
the - BSA, said the Israeli scout
leaders would spend most of
their time in America at • the
Schiff Scouting Reservation in
New -Jersey, a camp established
in honor of Mortimer Schiff, an
American Jewish , leader and
father of John Schiff, who cur-
rently heads the nationwide Boy
Scout movement.

Protest Lodged Against Ban on
Jewish Workers in Middle East

Because the New York State
Employment Service refused
to discriminate between Jewish
and non-Jewish workers, ap-
roximately 20;000 qualified . New
Yorkers were by-passed for
consideration - by the Army for
these overseas jobs, it was re-
vealed.

U.S. Senator Herbert I. Leh-
man said that he would investi-'
gate this discrimination. Earlier;
major Jewish organizations af
filiated in the National Commu-
nity Relations Advisory Council
called on the newly established
committee on government con-
tract compliance to give "top
priority" to an investigation of
discrimination against Jewish
workers by the U.S. Corps of
Army Engineers.
In a joint telegram, the
American Jewish Committee,
American Jewish Congress, Anti-
Defamation League of Bnai
Brith, Jewish Labor Committee,
Jewish War Veterans of the U.S.,
Union of Hebrew Congregations
and 27 Jewish.- community coun-
cils, which together comprise the
NCRAC, protested against the
testimony of General Nold, be-
fore the Senate Preparedness
Committee that New York work-
ers were not being recruited for
building military bases in Arab
countries because the contractors
believed a large number of them
would be of Jewish origin and
would be resented by the Arabs.

"General Nold's testimony,"
the protest said, "indicates that
New York construction work-
ers, both Jewish and non-
Jewish, have been the victims
of a discriminatory policy
which runs completely counter
to the provision requiring non-
discrimination in government
defense contracts and to the
purpose for which the com-
mittee on government contract
compliance was established.
We urge the committee to give
top priority to an investigation
of this discriininatory policy,
to determine how widespread
it is, and to take steps to end
it at. -once.

A spokesman for the Depart=
ment of Defense told. the JTA
that there have been no in-
stances of.friction in North Alri-
ca involving American Jews con-
nected with the Army's base-
building program. The depart-
ment noted, however, that . no
Jewish workers had been sent to
that area as yet.
Despite Gen: NOld's testimony%
the department spokesman in"-
iisted that ."there is no policy
Which would permit the sending
of the members of any religion,
as workers or as soldiers, to any
area where the Army is operat-
Mg."

WASHINGTON, (JTA)—Dis-
crimination by the United States
Army against Jewish workers in
recruiting personnel for Ameri-
can defense projects in the Mid-
dle East came under heavy fire
this week.
The discrimination against
Americans of Jewish faith was
revealed to the Senate Prepared-
ness Committee by Maj. Gen. G.
J. Nold, Deputy Chief of Army
engineers. He testified that the
Army asked State' employment
agencies to eliminate Jews from
among prospective workers on a
construction project in French
Morocco. The presence of Jewish
workers, Gen. Nold said, might
offend the Arabs.
