EVE COHEN
family duet in American Jewish
history to duel their way to the
1952 U.S. Olympic Fencing
Team.
Eve and Abe Cohen, t w o
Brooklyn youngsters who prac-
tically cut their teeth on swords,
look forward to making the trip
to Helsinski this summer.
At the rate the attractive 25-
year-old ex-cheder student is
going—she dueled herself into
first place in the opening Olym-
pic tryouts in the Eastern area
last week—the hope may soon
blossom into reality. Eve's
brother, Abe, 27, is also a fenc-
ing medalist who started the
"Fencin' Cohens" to fame.
At 14 he was nipping a sword
in high school. Eve, two years
his junior, watched with silent
interest: Two years • later, while
a student at Brooklyn College,
she wandered to the gym, ex-
changed mascara for a protec-
tive mask, and lifted . a short.
She never put it down. The
kid sister's greatest joy is telling
how, in a family match, she out-
dueled brOther Abe. But the tale
always ends with Eve's conces-
sion that "Abie was out of
shape."
Honor Mrs. Hulda Blum.
On Her 80th Birthday
Mrs. Huida Blum will be hon-
ored on her 80th birthday to-
night by her family at a dinner
at the Terrace Room of the
Statler Hotel.
The affair is being arranged
by her son and daughter-in-law,
Mr. and Mrs. J. Jerome Blum of
Oakman Court. She has another
son, Alvin, of New York, and
five grandchildren, and the en-
tire family is planning to come
here for her birthday celebra-
tion.
Born in Germany, Mrs. Blum
came to the United States, 60
years ago and settled in Detroit
about six years ago. The late
Judge Leopold Prince was her
brother. She is a member of
Temple Israel and in New York
she was active in the God-
mothers League.

Heard and Recorded
The Rabbinical Council of America at its recent conference in
atlantic City was on the verge of adopting a resolution sounding
a warning to the Jewish federations and local welfare funds
throughout the country that unless there is a change in their atti-
tude toward traditional Jewish institutions the Orthodox elements
in the country would be compelled to institute an independent
fund drive for their institutions. The chief advocate of an inde-
pendent campaign, I have been told, was Rabbi G. Appel of Seat-
tle, Wash., who insisted on wider cognizance by the welfare funds
of the traditional Jewish institutions and the introduction of a
"more positive Jewish content" into their programs and activities.
Cooler heads behind closed doors counselled against consideration
of such a resolution before other means were exhausted. In the
end the "l'maan hashalem" (for the sake of peace) motif prevailed.
The essence of the complaint was that most federations and
local welfare funds were discriminating against institutions tr'.
orthodox religious character despite the fact that the individual
donors to the funds have no objection to supporting institutions
maintained by such religious elements. It was pointed out that
less than half of the federations throughout the country were
making annual subsidies to the Federated Council of Israel Insti-
tutions, which supports about 138 yeshivas, orphanages, old age
homes, hospitals and other institutions in Israel. In 1951, it was
claimed, the Council-supported institutions received from the
funds about $137,000, or a cut of about 28 per cent as compared
with prior allocations. During the same year, the rabbis com-
plained, the American Fund for ,Israel Institutions received $329,-
000 from the federations though supporting only 48 cultural insti-
tutions.
There no doubt was merit to the complaints aired at Atlantic
City. However, it was an error to involve the American Fund in
a controversy to which it is not a party.
Things Worth Knowing
One of the top-notch Anglo-Jewish writers has boasted to
friends that after 30 years of labor he now actually has a capital
of $60 to show for his efforts.
Sunny Los Angeles is rapidly replacing New York as center of
shadchones business.
Motion picture producers in Israel have been asked for the
sake of austerity morale not to make shots of lusciously decorated
tables.
The New York Times book review section has finally recog-
nized the existence of Yiddish poetry in America by publishing
what is believed to be for the first time a translation of a Yiddish
poem in its "Poet's Column." The honor was extended to Aaron
Lutsky, with Samuel Kreiter, a frequent contributor to the Eng-
lish-Jewish press, as translator.
The youngest person to hold a license as radio technician is
a nine-year-old Jewish. youngster Paul Horowitz, of_ Summit,
N. J. Paul is considered a genius in the field.
There are many fine compliments to womanhood in the Tal-
mud. The one that should please our female readers most is to
the effect that God has endorwed them with more intelligence than
men. Elsewhere the Talmud pays tribute to women for their in-
nate ability to measure the worth and value of a stranger.
A building that was once the headquarters of American fas-
cism and anti-Semitism is now the office of the Seven Arts Fea-
ture Syndicate, an English-Jewish press service. It was from that
building that the notorious fascist Seward Collins operated. It
was the site of Scribners Commentator and the infamous Ameri-
can Review Bookshop where Bundists, anti-Semites and crackpots
congregated to devise anti-Jewish plots. And it was at that build-
ing that the American Nationalist Party held its first organiza-
tional meeting. One of the "star" book rummagers was notorious
Lawrence Dennis, one of the defendants in the mass sedition trial
_ Here is another similar curiosity. The building where the El
Al Israel National Airways is located was once' occupied by the
German Railways, a Nazi front which was closed down by the
government when we declared war against Germany.
Jewish Hospital Installs
Atom Device for Cancer
PHILADELPHIA, (AJP) — A
Jewish - sponsored hospital be-
came one of the first institu-
tions in the nation to install a
new atomic device in the treat
ment of cancer.
A report by Dr. J. Gershon-
Cohen, director of the Radioiso-
tope Division of the Jewish Hos-
pital here, disclosed that the in-
strument, a new device which
counts the splitting of atoms,
100 times as sensitive as the
"Geiger counter", has served to
greatly improve treatment of
certain types of cancer and thy-
roid disease.
