Ben-Yehuda Biography
Written by St. John

Eliezer Ben - Yehudah was a
man who made of his life a cru-
sade for the revival of Hebrew
as a living language, and in so
doing contributed as much as
anyone else to the foundation of
the new state of Israel by pro-
viding a common language to
serve as a unifying force. The
story of his devotion to his cause
is told in a new biography, "The
Tongue of the Prophets," by
Robert St. John, which Double-
day will publish on February 21.
Ben - Yehudah was born in
Lithuania, educated in Paris, re-
sided in various parts of the
world, and at the time of his
death in Palestine in 1922 had
lived to hear Hebrew spoken
freely again. His great diction-
ary was incomplete at the time
of his death, but work on it is
still being carried on. One of his
sons, Elud Ben-Yehudah, is cur-
rently in this country to lecture
about his father and his work.

Tripolitanian Jewish Community Liquidated

JERUSALEM, (JTA) — The
completion of the Tripolitanian
immigration and the virtual li-
quidation of the Tripolitanian
Jewish community was an-
nounced by Itzhak Raphael,
Jewish Agency immigration di-
rector. The arrival of 400 im-
migrants from Tripoli marked
the end of organized immigra-
tion.
Mr. Raphael revealed that
over 31,000 Jews came to Israel
from the North African country
in the past two years. Only 800
wealthy Jews who have been un-
able to liquidate their assets re-
main, together with some 500
aged and sick Jews who have no

Quietly,' without fanfare and to the astonishment of a Presi-
dential aide, the Seligman brothers laid before Mr. Lincoln the
huge sum they had succeeded in raising abroad through sale of
bonds to aid the Union. Historians compare their achievements
with the Battle of Gettysburg.

PHILADELPHIA, (AJP) The

"Sieg Heiling" hoodlums
banded together under the Nazi
banner and bent on a reign of
anti-Jewish terror set off a full-
scale probe amid increasing de-
mands that the Philadelphia
Board of Education formally
enter the case and sift facts.
- The existence of the teen-age
pro-Nazi high school group was
disclosed behind closed doors =at
a juvenile court hearing in
which two 15 - year - old youths
faced arson charges as a result
of tossing a gasoline bomb at a
synagogue two weeks ago. It
was the third case of synagogue
-vandalism.
A slip-up by one. of the de-
fendants set off the. bombshell.
A stream of questions by the
judge hearing the case brought
forth the disclosure from the
defendants that they were part
of • a _ Hitler-like youth group
which functioned in Olney High
School h e r e.
At first • skeptical, the judge
asked whether the youth knew
the Nazi salute.
Clicking his heels sharply,
the youngster came to strict at-
tention, raised his arm skyward
and shouted "Heil Hitler!" The
judge was convinced.

A CHALLENGE
TOACTION...NOW!

For 54 years, the Z.O.A. — The Zionist Organization
of America — has been a major force in mobilizing
mass support for Israel in the United States. The Z.O.A.
helped achieve Israel's statehood; the Z.O.A. has helped
to sustain Israel's independence. But our task is not
ended. Israel cannot yet stand alone. Now, when she
needs it most, we must join together in providing the
kind of assistance Israel most urgently needs. The
Z.O.A. Program for 1952 is designed to provide that
assistance. It is a challenge to action . . . now!
